Were these pears picked at the right time?

Neighbor behind me has some abandoned pear trees. He has told the neighborhood to “have at them.”

I don’t know what varieties they are, but I picked a couple today. They’re not soft yet, and don’t fall readily, but a twist and lift pops them off.

What do you think? Will they ripen properly? Any thoughts as to the variety?

Judging from the skin color they are at the green/ripe stage and perfect for picking. Store in the fridge and they should keep for 2-3 weeks. Put them in a box/bushel basket and put some newspaper over the top and they will be soft in a few days.

Another way to tell ripeness is to cut the fruit in half and examine the seeds. If seeds brown/tan they are ripe enough to pick. If the seeds are white then too early.
