i ordered this cherry tree to put in near my deck in a sheltered microclimate. its a nice 5fter but its bare root and i wont be able to plant it until at least early may. my fault i didnt check the shipping date. i have no place to keep it cool and dormant. im thinking of leaving it wrapped up and bury it in a snowbank right in the box. this should keep it cold but should also protect it from freezing. what would you guys do? ive never had this problem before. its a nice big tree with another cherry cultivar grafted to it. hate to lose it.
Pot it up and move it in the house. It will wake up and you could have a head start on new growth for this year.
ive thought of that but i dont have a window to put it in and i dont know how much it will grow in my grow room under my leds. i guess if kept in a 5 gal pot, it wouldnt grow too much.
I like the burried-in-snowbank idea…
unless your ground is NOT frozen (in which case plant it).
it probably isnt but the spot i want to plant it in has to be amended and a raised bed built before planting. its sleeping in the snowbank until i figure out what im doing with it. the more i think of it i may plant it in a 5 gal pot with just enough light to keep it alive under my leds in the front room. hopefully it doesnt go crazy on me.
Maybe pot it up and leave it on the north side of a building to keep it dormant?
that might work if i keep the pot buried in snow until it warms above freezing. decisions desicions!
For me i alternate my garage and sometimes just stick it inside overnight if my garage will get too cold. Do you have a compost pile? I have had to put early arrivals in a compost pile and then cover with snow and that worked out excellent!
I got a jujube over the cold spell i had ordered in 19 and finally got it planted last night in the spot for my new apple tree as my jujube spot was frozen solid and the spot for the apple tree only had a inch or two of frost to dig through.
Like you, I am pretty far north and spring comes pretty late for me. I have received trees way too early and had good luck potting them and putting them outside in a shady location. I’ve done this with quite a few bare root trees.
problem is were still geting below 0 at night and -0 windchills right now. i know the tree can handle it but im more worried about the bare roots.i think im going to pot it and bury the pot in snow. that should keep the roots protected and dormant until the snows gone. then i can plant it. thanks for the ideas folks.
That could work, most say to heal it in. Which means bury the roots, keep it moist and keep it horizontal, This will stop it from growing. You could pot it up, and knock it over,
See video for one way
Why you need to heal in.
