What is wrong with these apples?

I picked these Renette Zabergau apples back in August. Simply because something/someone was taking my apples from my trees. They were not close to being ripe at that time. I had these stored in my fridge since then. I picked 34 of these apples at that time. I have not really closely looked at these apples since about November. I went to get them out of the fridge crisper and had 4 of these apples that have the skin peeled away from the flesh.
The rest of the apples look fine. The apples that have peeled away from the flesh are not soft or moldy. The flesh is still hard like the other apples not affected by the peeled skin.
I honestly have never seen apples that have done this. Perhaps this is a normal thing that happens over months of storage.
Has anyone else seen this happen before? If so what is the reason for this? Cold conditions, excessive storage, too cold, too humid? The last picture is a picture of the apples when I picked them in August.
Thanks for reading.

I have had that happen. I don’t recall the variety but it may have been Liberty. My thought is that the apples were fermenting from the inside out. To be honest, I don’t know if that’s even possible, but that’s what it made me think of. Very annoying!

My theory would be this apple tends to crack some…and once cracked, a difference in moisture levels inside vs outside the apple caused the rest…

I also get that and I agree with BlueBerry its cracking that starts it. My Wageners had it pretty bad this year and some other varieties also had some of it.

Seen it a lot, especially in Galas
