So i have this AM plum i got from our county conservation 3 years ago as a tiny seedling. Its in a terrible spot and its still spindly. Im gonna transplant to a diff spot with lots of backfill better dirt.
However my question is after a year of recovery this, what would you do with it? What can i graft to it that would make sense in 5b? Would you just let it stay an American Plum?
Well, according to @Barkslip, you can graft many different types of stone fruit on it, like peaches, nects, euro and asian plums, apricots and so on. But in your environment, I don’t know if those would work out for you. There are some hardy 'cots that might be OK for you, like the various Har varieties, and maybe Contender, Intrepid, Reliance peaches?
We transplanted some Am Plums last week, and hope they survive the re-planting. I would like to convert them to peach trees next year, if we get a lot of growth out of our new peach trees. I would like to go get some more from the place these came from and plant them on the farm for these purposes.
Our Am plums are very spindly as well, about 6ft tall, and maybe a one inch thick trunk.
I’ve been digging Am. Plum. from the roadsides the last two days for naturalization on my property to serve the birds and for a source of rootstocks.
I take wet towels and garbage bags and hit the road. Roll em up and bag em and bring them home and plant them. Cut them back real hard so they establish quicker/well.
