Is anyone growing any of the wild plums on a small commercial scale - American, Chickasaw or Beach?
I’d like to hear about your experiences. Also, does anyone know of a source for any of the improved or selected cultivars for any of these plums?
mailordernatives.com - for Guthrie and Odom
basspecantrees.com - for Excelsior
And search for Chickasaw plum on this forum, you’ll find a great deal of information on those and other varieties.
@coolmantoole has a lot of threads with great info
I’ve been killing a stand of wild plums…with Crossbow…and today I got the last one with the chain saw. But they still will sprout up. They came from nowhere, for I had the area cleared completely in 1991, 1992.
Fedco sells a selected Prunus Americana called Pamela. I have one, and it is indeed tasty.
Thanks!
My graduate work was working with a couple of Oklahoma producers who wanted Prunus angustifolia grafted onto common rootstock. They wanted it grafted because as BlueBerry noted, it tends to sucker a bit and they wanted orchards.
What they had been doing before was paying people for fruit they collected, or collecting it themselves. They then would turn it into jams and jellies and sell it as a “Made in Oklahoma” product. I think one of them might have made wine out of it. I’m not sure if they are still in business. They didn’t seem very committed to the idea.
@ztom I just put in an order for Pamela from Fedco. Do you still have the tree, and do you have any other thoughts on the variety like tree health? The description indicates that it is fully freestone, has that been your experience?
