Wild rice planting

Anyone here have any experience with wild rice planting?

I haven’t but I’ve always thought of growing some in a raised bed (lined so I can flood it, unless I can find upland rice) I’ve found I can’t find a source of rice seed for actual planting.

Rice is a pretty big in Louisiana… Second only to Arkansas in the US.

Im looking for the northern American types. They grow in water and the natives harvested it using canoes.

i was wondering if you can just buy wild rice at the super market and plant that.

I’ve been growing it in a 4’x4’ tub for a number of years. It reliably self seeds and comes back every year.

Did you just plant hull on wild rice from a health store?

No. Wild rice sold for food has been heated. To plant one needs fresh seed that has never been dried out or heated.

where do you get it? it sounds interesting to grow- a kiddie pool or big aquarium setup might work

I got them from Everwilde.

If anyone local to me wants some I’m always happy to share in western Washington.

could you explain you way of growing it? i would like to try this soon.

I put compost in the plastic tub, topped it off with water and then dropped the seeds in. Sited in a sunny spot with additional water added as needed. It’s that simple. The only challenging parts are finding a source for live seeds (these should still be wet) and removing hulls after harvest (which requires heating).

Thank you for the details, i guess dry seeds from the store wont work then.

Hoping to grow it in a pond one day…once I have a pond.

What is your yield like @JohannsGarden? 1, 10, 100 meals?

Unless you’re growing them on a large body of water I wouldn’t expect significant yields. In my 4’x4’ tub I can produce enough to collect a small jar to mix into various dishes, but as a stand alone ingredient it wouldn’t go far.
