I bought a place in Nevada City CA late last year with a well established mulberry tree. I’ve been awaiting the fruits but I’m now worried it may be a male the catkins are drying up and I see no signs of fruits emerging. Wondering if it just fruits later in the summer? Would love any info experienced mulberry tree caretakers know. Thank you! -Trinity
Don’t own one, but I thought mulberries were self-pollinating for the most part…
@Trinity, it would be easier for me to tell if you had pictures from back when it was flowering, but I’d say you probably have a male.
Don’t despair! They’re really easy to graft. My first successful graft was using a mulberry and duct tape.
@jeremymillrood, I believe mulberries will fruit without pollination, but the trees do come in male and female, and the males don’t fruit.
I have heard of male mulberries many times, but haven’t actually seen one. I believe they are commonly planted in America as they produce less mess.
If anyone has some pictures of male and female mulberry catkins that they are willing to show it would be useful.
I’ve always cut down mulberry trees because of the mess they make and the mess the birds make when they eat them. I might have to see about planting a couple in the pastaway from the house. It seems a lot of people really like them.
I enjoyed eating mulberries from a lovely shade tree on Jackson Street in Berea Kentucky yesterday.
