I got it like this from the nursery, several others have died for other reasons, but this one is still alive after a couple years. Wondering if long-term it will make it? Should I just pull it out now and start over?
Don’t pull it. You can try to save it by cutting below the knotted part and let it send out some new shoots. I accidentally weeds whacked several of my pawpaw seedlings and they re sprouted invthe past.
This one is a grafted Wabash, so to me, a seedling would be near useless unless I knew it was a good variety seed stock.
How much sun does it get?
huh. bought as a bareroot?
looks almost like everything below that knot was supposed to be below grade…planted too high? looks like roots exposed above ground…
Gets full sun until about 5pm.
Yes bought bare root, supposedly field dug, but man that root looks to me like something went wrong in a pot, but don’t know for sure. I paid quite a lot for many Peterson pawpaws, lot of things went wrong on that order, including shipping to an old address.
Mostly just curious as to what people think if it’s worth keeping. As a mature tree would that eventually girdle itself and die? Or grow over and just have a big ol knot there?
Several ideas about that tree…
Tony’s idea about cutting it below " the ugly " is one.
But if the graft is cut off you will have a seedling.
Could graft the top ( scions )onto it after you cut it.
( a good option )
Or tie it to a stake , and try to straighten it out.
If it survives as is,…
It sure will have character .!. ?
