Winter Fig Gig & More At My House

Last year I hosted a winter local fig gig at my house that was
a big success, so we’re going to do it again this year, but I’ve decided
to invite anyone on the forum that is within reasonable driving distance to Columbia, SC.
The date is saturday January 26. It’s actually much more than a fig gig.
I give a grafting demonstration and a tour of my whole orchard,
which includes peaches, nectarines, plums, pluots, pears, apples, and roses.
All of my trees need pruning, so you’re welcome to take scion wood from anything I grow. it’s the wrong time of year for roses, but you’ll be able to see my favorite varieties. I’ll explain all of my growing techniques and spray programs. I’ll also show my watermelon patches and demonstrate how to properly grow them. Bring your own baggies and labels, and water, if you’ll need it.
There will be no refreshments, as I have no outside seating area. This is a way to meet new fellow fruit growers, exchange ideas and swap plants. So bring anything you’d like to swap. I’ll be giving away several in ground figs that I need to move. Since I’ve had recent hernia surgery, you’ll have to dig them yourself, but I’ll provide shovels.

We plan to get started around 10:00: I live at 721 Beacon Hill Rd., Columbia, SC 29210. I’m directly just off both I-26 and I-20. My yard is totally flat and easy to maneuver.
If you’d like to come or want to ask questions please PM me.

Wow. That sounds awesome. Wish I could just snap my fingers and be there.

Sounds like fun. Are you trying any poms down there? What figs are working well for you in Columbia?

I started with 11different poms and am now down to just 2,
so they don’t do well here, except for Wonderful. I have some
40 different varieties of figs and they all do well here. The ones
that don’t usually are more acclimated to the PNW, and I stay
away from those.
Will you be coming?.

I might try - still looking at my schedule (I’m a professor up in Black Mtn, NC)

Looks like I’ll be coming with a student and a colleague - looking forward to it!

Good, if you get lost my phone # is 803-260-5522.

We’ll see you tomorrow - looking forward to it!

We all are. Too much cabin fever.

if only you were closer, sounds like fun.

We’re runninf about 15 minutes late, but we’ll see you there

Take your time, some others are running late also.

Sounds like fun. How about some others trying this in other parts of the country! No refreshments needed. Bring your own lawn chair. Very casual. All you would need to provide is rest room and parking. It would be great to put a face to some of the people we have been corresponding with for years.
