Last year I hosted a winter local fig gig at my house that was
a big success, so we’re going to do it again this year, but I’ve decided
to invite anyone on the forum that is within reasonable driving distance to Columbia, SC.
The date is saturday January 26. It’s actually much more than a fig gig.
I give a grafting demonstration and a tour of my whole orchard,
which includes peaches, nectarines, plums, pluots, pears, apples, and roses.
All of my trees need pruning, so you’re welcome to take scion wood from anything I grow. it’s the wrong time of year for roses, but you’ll be able to see my favorite varieties. I’ll explain all of my growing techniques and spray programs. I’ll also show my watermelon patches and demonstrate how to properly grow them. Bring your own baggies and labels, and water, if you’ll need it.
There will be no refreshments, as I have no outside seating area. This is a way to meet new fellow fruit growers, exchange ideas and swap plants. So bring anything you’d like to swap. I’ll be giving away several in ground figs that I need to move. Since I’ve had recent hernia surgery, you’ll have to dig them yourself, but I’ll provide shovels.
We plan to get started around 10:00: I live at 721 Beacon Hill Rd., Columbia, SC 29210. I’m directly just off both I-26 and I-20. My yard is totally flat and easy to maneuver.
If you’d like to come or want to ask questions please PM me.
