Interesting IE was tested as mostly ruba
Short version is that DNA was extracted from samples and compared with the alba reference genome. Specific rubra fragments were identified which were then used to quantify pure rubra, hybrid alba/rubra, or “mostly” rubra. Of the samples submitted, a majority are pure rubra. Comparing the north/south cline, it is very obvious that hybrids are more common in northern regions. Said another way, southern source samples are more likely to be pure rubra.
Another interesting correlation is that varieties currently available from nurseries are overwhelmingly hybrids though a few pure alba are represented in the results.
Very cool results! Thanks for sharing! If anyone has scions from some northern rubra samples please let me know.
Rubra do not propagate by cuttings if anyone was not already aware of that.
