Worthy Red Mulberry project (with cash reward)

The PDF file is the laboratory results file, but it doesn’t identify who the 1 to 102 sample ids correspond to. Sorry, I not very computer savy, so I will just post the results as photos.

Interesting IE was tested as mostly ruba

Short version is that DNA was extracted from samples and compared with the alba reference genome. Specific rubra fragments were identified which were then used to quantify pure rubra, hybrid alba/rubra, or “mostly” rubra. Of the samples submitted, a majority are pure rubra. Comparing the north/south cline, it is very obvious that hybrids are more common in northern regions. Said another way, southern source samples are more likely to be pure rubra.

Another interesting correlation is that varieties currently available from nurseries are overwhelmingly hybrids though a few pure alba are represented in the results.

Very cool results! Thanks for sharing! If anyone has scions from some northern rubra samples please let me know.

Rubra do not propagate by cuttings if anyone was not already aware of that.

Just wanted to share that Weston Lombard will be giving an update on this true Red Mulberry project this Saturday, Nov. 8, at 10:30 AM Pacific / 1:30 PM Eastern. It’s part of the NAFEX 2025 Virtual Conference. You can ask questions in real time and it will be recorded for later viewing. If you’re interested in joining or watching later, here’s the link: https://nafex.org/index.php/nafex-2025-virtual-conference/

cann you expound more on this? i was planning on trying to graft a cutting onto my hybrid rootstock, do you just mean it wont root?

He means rooting a cutting wont work so you should graft. Rooting is like taking a cutting and putting it soil and waiting for roots to develop. Hope that makes sense.

yeah i know what rooting is but propagating by cutting to me felt a little vague  yes ive heard they dont really root

Standard term for rooting, essentially interchangeable

Literally everything (that’s a eudicot) is graftable if the rootstock is compatible and you are skilled enough so there’s no actual ambiguity
