Zombie Nectarine

For better or worse, I headed off a second year (for me) nectarine in the early spring with no branches below the cut (trying to use the “Grow a Little Fruit Tree” method).

It never leafed out (others did). I’ve tried notching and scraping above budish looking points and reheading 2" down.

The bark scrape test was green in June at the top and bottom, but now just toward the bottom, but still above the graft. It’s not growing and it’s not dead, i.e. zombie.

It’s had no photosynthesis since fall 2022.

Any chance this would not die over winter and leaf out after a winter of dormancy in 2024?

Otherwise I would plant another potted tree here now.

If it leafs out again it’s a good chance it will be from the root stock. I’ve got one now that the top half died and root stock shot up.
