If you decide to do the cages I would strongly recommend using an angle grinder with a cutoff disk. Makes a lot of noise and sparks but cuts through the wires like butter. More importantly it creates a smooth cut unlike the razor sharp ends you get with bolt cutters. @Ahmad

Now that you’re at the six year mark, are the cages still holding up? I’m thinking about doing something similar for about 25 trees, but the prices of reinforcing mesh has doubled (or more) since your 2017 post so I want to make sure it will last.

I’ve got remesh cages that are a decade old. They are just as solid now as the day I put them around trees.

A couple welds have failed, but they are fine and still in regular use.
