2022 - 2023 Grafting Thread

Tried my first two peach grafts today. Here’s “Traveler’s Joy” on Nemaguard rootstock, this one might end up staying in the greenhouse if it’s curl-prone:

The other Travelers Joy scion went on the Oregon Curl Free tree that I planted out last week, to be the leaf curl tester for this cultivar.

I gather that peaches are a lot tougher to graft than avocados (most of my grafting experience), so I’ll just grow out the rootstock and try something next year if this doesn’t take.

Odds not good, but not impossible.

I was going to say “probably not”. Same idea.

Just grafted Monday. Hope this is real (I have seen bud swell this quickly on successful peach and apricot before).

My first rootstock grafts. All are showing some indication of waking up, some more than others. They are on BUD9

This was a big step for me. Most have whip and tongue.

My 20th Century on Callery pear grafts seem to be taking! This one is bleeding a bit, but I’m not too worried. Which has me worried that I should be worried…

I think you meant the above post for someone else? I made the post shown below here encouraging new folks to try grafting, and you responded by encouraging me to try grafting! ha. I’ve been grafting about 10 years. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no professional and I appreciate the encouragement and I do still get a thrill out of watching grafts come alive and send out growth, but I think you must have meant to tag someone else. Either way, it was a nice email and I hope other new folks will be encouraged either by my original encouragement post or your encouragement post to me! ha.

Here is the post I made and you replied to:

.xxx

I think they were agreeing with you and encouraging others to graft, too?

It’s definitely possible for them to root, treat them like any other cuttings and give them some love (parafilm on top so they don’t dry out, a bit of water to soak in and a fresh angled cut on the bottom, maybe a little root hormone). I haven’t had success but haven’t put in a lot of effort, I just stuck them in some potting soil and hoped. There’s a reason they are cloned, it’s not too hard to do. Cuttings just might not be the preferred /most effective method.

Looking great!! You’ll never succeed unless you try! And if you fail, you learned a way not to do it.

AHHH…now that makes sense! I was confused by it but now I think you’re right!

Either way, I do hope more people try grafting…its so much fun. I’m already on “bud watch” - its been 8 days since I did a bunch of grafts so I’m checking the buds on them daily for swelling and new growth! Its such fun anticipating it.

I just released a grafting video showing a couple whip-n-tongue and a cleft graft on apples: Grafting Apples - YouTube

Grafted ten Caddo pecans to seedlings yesterday. Two flap grafts and 8 bark grafts. Makes about 25-30 this season. Fingers crossed.

So far so good… like seeing green buds on all 4 now.

I have some bud swell happening on my apple grafts now…

So… Is this correct… any new growth from the rootstock… I should remove ? Just scratch it off ?

Thanks

I do scratch off the buds on the rootstock if they seem really vigorous. But, I’ve also learned from experience that rubbing all buds from the rootstock for 3 months and if the graft doesn’t take, then you are apt to lose the rootstock to death too.

So, I’m not so zealous anymore to rub all the buds, just the vigorous ones.
Maybe somebody else has a difference of opinion.

I agree with Blueberry. I like to give the roots something to do while the scion is dormant/young.

For avocados, I like to let a rootstock bud expand enough that I can pinch the tip, leaving behind a single leaf. The idea is that will keep the rootstock going but redirecting energies to wake up the dormant buds on the scion. I don’t know if this makes sense, but I’ve had pretty good results. I only do this for one bud and scratch off the rest.

That makes sense… I will try that.
Thanks
