I am trying this to air layer a graft of carmine goumi off my red gem bush. I started it early July… hope it has roots by end of September.
I need to get a goumi established at our new home site.

Interesting to hear about feijoas… so you just wrap soil around a branch without any wound? Do you use any rooting hormone or is it really that easy??
Pretty much. I scraped off half the bark on one branch and the roots only grew out of where the bark was untouched. Also where I mulched, a couple of lower branches were covered in mulch and they grew roots as well.
I did use hormone, but I don’t think it’s essential.
I should add this is just my experience and it was with seedlings, not named varieties. Others may have had success with girdling or wounding.
9 out of 10 sucess rate on air-layer apple root stocks started this spring. The one with no visible roots mat have roots, i’ll inspect after a good soak i water.

I’ve successfully air-layered berries (black currants, goose berries etc…)
It took me over a month before I could see the roots through plastic containers. It was a bit problematic because every few days I had to hydrate them. But I was happy with the results - all grew well on new turf.
I’m in zone 7a, its mid August, bark is slipping it’s bud wood season. But do you think its too late to start MM111 apple air-layers for early spring root stocks?
Thanks
Hi all, so I’ve cut this loquat air layer assuming it’s getting too cold for further root development. The root development is pretty weak… first time air layering… how do I keep this thing alive?
Repot it to quality potting soil? Those roots don’t look like enough to hold up a plant that size so throw some mycorhizzae into the mix?
Has anyone airlayered guava before?
I’ve got some even sadder air layer trials that don’t have any roots, and I’m not sure if this is just callous or the beginning of roots. Any recommendations on how to salvage these or are they hopeless at this point? (fig, pomegranate, sudachi)
Balance the leaf to root ratio by removing most of the leaves.
When they callous over, that means no more rooting? Or can you leave it on longer
My experience only but callousing back together equals a failed air layer. After you remove a ring of bark, scrape all the cambium off with the side of your knife. Then coat the whole shooting match including the upper and lower bark, plus bare wood with rooting hormone. I use clonex gel, clonex seems to work the best for me.
