Amazon Pruner Scam

Is that latch secure? Maybe those should be my next pocket pruners.

You’ve done a good job of capturing the radial texture on the blade grind. That’s how my blades look too.

And the shape is crisp and clean compared to those counterfeits in earlier post:

Apparently even the VS series isn’t meant to be sold in the U.S. by Asian distributors. U.S. distributors charge at least 30% more for the same product and when Clark spoke of the problem of counterfeits they recommended buying from expensive U.S. distributors.

It’s all a racket. Why are the 9 inch pruners so
much more expensive than the 7’s & 8’s?

Either supply and demand, or those Japanese love to stick it to tall, large sized Americans.

@alan

Had no problem at all with them being secure they are just different from the last ones I got on Amazon. The latch on the handle works fine so far. In 2019 peaches and I ordered some from Amazon and they were inexpensive Ars pruners like what are normally sold in the USA. Think the key to this is watch the seller. Ultimately Amazon is responsible for what people sell on their website. Sometimes 4 or 5 people are here at one time and it’s great if you have extra pruners and pickers on hand for those occasions. They come in handy to have an extra pair in the glove box of the truck if nothing else. When peaches and I split up some things like pruners I left with her as she will need them.

@rayrose

The price is up on everything right now from inflation. Everything is about 1/3 overpriced.

@murky

Thanks that steel is the best way I know of to tell what kind of pruners we have quickly. Stamped junk steel is not going to fool us and 100% of the junk pruners I’ve seen use it.

The felco don’t look nearly as good beside ARS.

@alan

Think you would really like this holster if you like the 8". Do you already have it?

I assume you are commenting on the design. The construction quality on both is very good in my view. These Felcos are much older. One of the red plastic handle covers eventually came loose and then off and I replaced it. Was expensive for what it is. You can probably see that I didn’t get it fully installed correctly (the bottom of the two handles).

I think the ARS is more maneuverable for close in cutting because the finger (bottom) handle allows you to grip closer to the blade. I also really like the thumb crook hump on the ARS, but when I then tried the Felco again, it feels good there too. My brother, who is an archeologist living in American Samoa, is in town for a few months, and his wife posted a video of them on a suburban nature hike and harvesting limbs in bloom for tea by breaking them in his hands. After seeing that, I offered and gave my Felcos to him.

When he showed his wife he said I gave them to him because I took pity on him, but I corrected him, I took pity on the trees.

I requested a refund and return label for the “counterfeit” ARS pruners I purcahsed. The return label is to an address in China and is not postage paid. The seller refunded part of the cost and is trying to get me to agree to that. Based on how much shipping is to China that might be my best move… I obviously didn’t research the seller sufficiently on Amazon to realize that would be required!

I would insist on full refund. If it is counterfeit, it isn’t a return because you changed your mind, it is illegal fraud.

@wdingus

Do not agree to those terms what they did is illegal. If you return them they will send them to someone else. If they asked me to return counterfeit pruners I would say no. That would be like them asking us to return their counterfeit $20 bill! Contact Amazon and the consumer protection agency.

@murky

Yes I mean ARS are so well made there is just no comparison. Years ago Felco was the standard all pruners were judged by in my world until @alan convinced me ARS were the way to go.

BTW, don’t have scallions, but the ARS cut fern leaves and blackberry leaves :

No fern leaves yet… I tried the scallion test. My real ARS, cheap Fiskars and some other cheap brand all cut the scallions cleanly. I tried cutting some wild onions and none of them cut cleanly. Only my very old Seymour Smith Snap Cut cut wild onions cleanly.

The new ARS were like a hot knife through butter on wild onions. Since they are called “light duty” to demonstrate how good they are I did a bunch at once rather than a single onion. Wild onions are much stronger than regular onions in multiple ways. The ARS latching system is not as good as my 8" pruners but it works.

Genuine ARS can be found on this website as well

ARS Tools is a Westparts division and is responsible for ARS in the Netherlands, Belgium and France. On their website they sell the pruners I just bought from Amazon for 32.10 Euro which equals 35.40 United States Dollar today. Prices seem very fair for those who are looking for authentic quality tools.

This is the ARS in Japan https://www.arscorporation.jp/

@wdingus Dont agree to those terms. I contacted my credit card company since Amazon is hard to talk to anybody. They told me it was illegal to ship back a counterfeit item. They said keep them and I would have a full refund on my statement.

At this point, anyone here who knows they will be getting counterfeit items shipped from China can basically be assured they will get a free set of pruners if willing to go through the hassle. Actually, if everyone ordered them and reported it, maybe the sellers would stop selling if they knew they would be losing money…

@disc4tw

The real problem is the Taiwanese knock-off company called Yamato that is dumping these counterfeits on the USA market through a host of distributors.

Obligatory “I am not a lawyer”…

I don’t know if I would necessarily characterize these pruners as “counterfeit”. They do not have an ARS logo anywhere on them and they’re different enough to be easily distinguishable from the real thing. No real packaging to speak of and what there is doesn’t claim they’re something they aren’t.

That’s not to say the seller wasn’t deceitful though! I do want my money back but I don’t want to be out more in postage to send them back than they’re worth. I also don’t necessarily want a free set of pruners, I’m quite willing to pay for a good set. As long as I receive precisely what is advertised of course.

I hoped these would be grey market or similar, completely legit, just at a good price. Yeah I knew there was a reasonable chance that wouldn’t work out, it was a gamble for sure…

I believe I’ll respond to the seller that if it was a simple misunderstanding, I might just accept their partial refund and leave it be. But being deceitful, selling one thing and shipping something completely different, doesn’t set well with me. I’m gonna demand the remainder of my money back and advise that they can provide a pre-paid label if they want them back. Escalating with Amazon, or my bank, if that doesn’t work out… Wish me luck :slight_smile:

Good luck. I think Amazon should take care of you - in your case, the sender didn’t send you what you ordered.

If they’d sent you a tennis ball instead of the ARS pruners you ordered, would they expect you to pay to ship it back for a partial refund? I don’t think so.
