An Idaho School Farm Diary

I started some gopher spurge seed a few years ago. None germinated and I must have tossed the soil into a garden bed. One plant came up last year and I’m moving it into the orchard. I think it is quite pretty - might want to grow more. No idea if it actually deters voles.

A parent volunteer did a bunch of weeding in the greenhouse - super grateful to have the help!

Here is a Saturday tour of the animal area and inhabitants.
First up is “Bunny Village” with Lily and Violet.
Then the chicken run.
Then the goat and hay shed.
Lastly the corral with Buddy, Rascal, Kulu, and Atal.
I have one apple tree planted in the corral. I’ll add another this year, and then planning for at least one mulberry.

Thanks to advice on this forum, I cut this volunteer elderberry back to the ground this winter. It has never looked so happy!

This fledgling magpie is in with the goats and chickens. I don’t need more magpies around, but I’m rooting for him. I set out some water, and I think the parents are bringing food.

Yesterday my camp counselors did a work day to prepare for summer camp. We cleaned out the goat, chicken, and rabbit pens. I used the tractor to turn and re-pile last fall’s compost, then we built the new one - it was up to about 95 degrees F this morning. Last photo is of the welcome table for camp, this week’s theme is “Garden Time”, 21 kids from 6-13 weeding, planting, eating, and learning.

Compost was up to 130 today. Weather was a bit chilly so had a fire for the kiddos. We taste tested 15 types of mint - Chocolate was still the winner.
