On which island do you live? New Shoreham? Aquidneck (Newport area)?
I’ve suspected that Block Is probably is zone 7a, given the moderation offered by the surrounding ocean.
I grew up in Lincoln and went to URI for a time.

Newport! But I am from NYC.
When the red is inside the peach it’s appealing to me, especially in a white peach and it usually means higher acid and more flavor, it seems. On the exterior, bright red color is a bird magnet (evidence of the “in our DNA” attractiveness of bright red color).
Well we have 3-5" forecasted for Monday. Time to get the snowmobile back out. My buds are starting to swell on my plums and the peaches are still silvertip.
Me too. Interestingly, internal red in peaches is generally considered a negative in breeding programs. Peach descriptions sometimes praise peaches w/ no red in the flesh (especially around the pit). I had customers last year who told me they didn’t like it. One customer last year specifically requested peaches which had no red in the flesh.
A different customer who got some peaches with a lot of red in the flesh said she didn’t want anymore of those. When I asked why, she said the red juice reminded her too much of blood, lol.
Ugly stuff…snow all around me…hope i squeeze through with nothing.
Nice to see a fellow Islander here. I’m north of you in Portsmouth.
Are you inland or by the sea?
I’m right near the Portsmouth Post Office on East Main.
Gotcha! I’m a block off of Bellevue
How many fruit trees do you have growing? I received 3 cherry trees as a gift last year from my old man which brought me to this forum. They are in pots at the moment as I’m not sure where to plant them. I’ve debated planting fruit trees as it’s easy to go to Sweet Berry and pick your own, although there prices seem to go up and up every year.
Well it seems we are probably past the chances for freezes. Now starts severe storm season. Time to get out the hail protection. Lol. Seriously though. We have a chance for large hail tonight.
Those folks are on the wrong track healthwise. The red is the healthiest part. The more color in ones food the better.
I never use the H*** word at this time of the year. I kept bees for a pyo strawberry grower who would get truely mad at employees or customers who talked about it. She did get more of it than her fair share.
To me the best peaches I have eaten are like that. Such a peach was what inspired me to grow them again. (My dad had trees when i was a kid). As most times the store peaches are bad, and when I got some winners at last, it reminded me how good they can be. Of course growing them has not been easy and the I might again have a lean yer due to the late freezes arriving in a few days. 4 days of mid-20’s, might kill them all.
How bloomed out are you?
I think my Saturn (in the ground/use to be in a container until last spring) got zapped over winter…all the flower buds look toast. I’m not sure what i’ll do with it.
Yesterday was in the 60Fs, but i’m still not seeing any flowers yet.
I would say first pink, the low one of the 4 nights is 23. Hope it rises, and it may, Everyday it has changed.
I got two 28Fs, 26F and a 30F in my forecast… i’ll be bringing most plants back into the house/garage. I think the in ground trees should be fine. Saturday is suppose to be crazy windy )gusts to 40mph)
Warm these are tough days for you.
Soon it will be over and talk of freezes/frost and cold weather will be a distant memory. The kids and I will be frolicking in the park…leaping and jumping…prancing and dancing among the fragrant gardens. Our skin will beam with summer time bronze…or something like that.
I do love those warm summer evenings when the sun is just setting…walking down by the river watching the boats…
