And here comes the freeze

After starting this morning at 31F, the temperature today hit 75F… Some areas in Iowa went from the mid 20Fs to 80F+…

my robada apricot seems ok。but the one I grafted last year, had Three flower buds this year, was missing one bud and other two buds look dry。

Yup. That was me. 22 F this am and probably 80 F this afternoon. Ugh… my yard is a terrible place for fruit trees!

My Superior plum is showing white… :cold_sweat:

r

Here comes shot number whatever…

Oh no that ones aimed at Texas…then points east

It’s definitely aimed more westward this time around…where these recent shots are more centered at Michigan/NE…this one looks like it wants to come down the plains… we’ll keep an eye on it…still way out, but pretty consistent the last few model runs.

My lights are already on for the night…

Do you cover things or just put on lights?

I just went out and put sheets over my Superior plum that is showing white. My Alderman has too few buds to worry about.

I do both.

All of my stone fruit are totally smoked. I’ll be super surprised if a single fruit is set on any of them. I did see a few peach blossom that were still closed up yesterday, but I’d guess they’re dead too. I just hope the pommes stay sleeping for a bit longer, but they don’t look like they are going to.

How cold are you expecting it to be tonight?

I don’t even know muddy…right now it doesn’t even matter, everything at risk is already finished.

Just went and checked and it’s 26.2 right now…it’s been like this seemingly for days now. It’s been much colder though a few nights ago.

I’m at 17 deg right now. My trees only have swollen buds so I think I’ll be fine unless we get a freak warm spell, lol.

Another solid blast of winter is due on Sun.

Here is a link to a Michigan State article about freeze damage, each of the bulletin points at the bottom is an article within itself. Some very good reading, information I had not ever seen before. The link is ugly on here if someone can make it look “prettier” feel free!

Time to pack up my operation and head to Key West.

Don’t move down here. All my outdoor stone fruit that I didn’t protect has been wiped out for the fourth year running. All we’ll have again is apples and a few late blooming pears, assuming we don’t get another freeze. Some apples bloom late here because they don’t get enough chilling. That’s all that saves anything most yrs.

Move to a real fruit producing area like CA or WA. Unless you like heat and humidity. Then south FL would be good.

I couldn’t handle a south Florida summer. Plus the driving down their scares me

I think your right on WA/OR area… Idaho and Utah would work i’m sure if you were in the lower elevations. /// I like the thought of warm dry mtn air.

After next weeks cold there is some hints of warm air making its way here.

Yes the Boise/Lewiston area of ID or Grand Junction in CO. That’s 150-180 days freeze free. You’ve got to get west of the Rockies. Even there only a very few selected areas are relatively freeze free.

The cold arctic air moves south on the east side of the Rockies and usually gets to West TX 1-2 days before Chicago.

But hey the lower elevations of the CA central valleys all the way from Bakersfield to Redding is light yrs ahead of anywhere else in USA. Even Redding has a 275 day freeze free season. Redding is almost as far north as Chicago.

That makes at least two of us.
