Flavor Queen Pluot:
weatherman - How big are those pots you’re growing in? I thought I was pushing it with a 15 gallon for my Bartlett, but yours look even smaller in the pics. Do you get decent yield from your trees?
They range from 5 gallons to 15 gallons.
And no impact on production? Good to know.
My pluerry produced a lot of fruit last year.
The rest of the trees produced a small crop due to a late frost.
I think I speak for the norther folks when I say that these pictures are inducing extreme jealousy! Months to go… months to go…
TWM,
Can you describe the Pluerry taste? I loss all my fruits to the squirrels last year.
Tony
During their crunchy stage, they taste like a cherry and some kind of a tropical-like flavor. When they are fully ripe, they taste like a peach and apricot. If you overwater the tree, they taste bland and mushy.
Weatherman,
Do you trim the root, replace the soil annually. Or what’s your maintenance procedure for potted fruit trees?
I started to have interests for at least a few potted fruit trees. And what type of fruit (peach, pear, apple, cherry, apricot, nectarine) tree is better as far as maintenance, fruiting, etc. than other?
Tom
I have grown peach and nectarine as well as plum in pots and in fact am doing so again. I had some in 7 gallon pots and some in 15 gallon pots. All produced plenty of fruit in fact I really needed to do some good thinning work on them to get the fruit up to size but they did size up pretty well. I have just started growing stone fruit in pots again. I once had an Anna and an unknown low chill apple in pots also. They fruited well but then died of fire blight the next year. Have not done pears in pots before and I can’t seem to find anyone else who has done them that way either. I am tempted to try and see what they do. Oh I had my original trees for several years and I never did any root pruning or anything like that.
I asked about my potted pear about a year ago and the general feedback was that 15 gallons was too small. The pot it ultimately ended up in is more like 17-18, but I guess we’ll see how it goes this year.
I’ve fruited apricot in pots as small as 3 gal. Also 4 nectarines in one 15 gal pot. Never had issues getting fruit set. But the fruit is smaller than normal no matter how much you thin.
Man what a pretty site!
