Missing 2 of my favorite, Rubinette and Freyburg
Actually, Pitmastons grown here are distinctively pineapple-flavored, and this article from Ram Fishman suggests that this flavor is indeed the origin of the name (as with Ananas Reinette).
My Pitmastons are much more heavily russeted than yours, for what its worth. My Ananas have only a tiny bit around the stem.
I read that bit about the name from a website from England with the history of this apple.
Ananas Reinnette had no pineapple taste or any inkling to it, at least, the ones grown in my yard. Maybe, my taste buds are not sufficiently refined.
Oops. I grafted Rubinette successfully this year, so one more for us.
These russeted apples won’t win a beauty contest but they taste good.
@mrsg47 it took until this week that my Pomme Grise started to ripen. Mine are small.
I picked mine early this year due to rain. Mine were small as well. Next year!
Is there a favorite you have of the four?
Sorry it took a while to sample this year’s batch. Between my daughter and I, we tasted the four above.
Golden Russet, crisp, sweet/tart
Hoople’s, not as crisp, markedly sour
Roxbury Russet, not as crisp. More sour and the water core made my daughter said “it tasted odd”.
Pomme Grise, texture was almost tender, sweeter than the other three.
This round, we like Golden Russet the most for its crisp texture and more balanced taste.
This can change.
Hoople’s, being a sport of Golden Delicious, should be sweet, very sweet, not sour. Is it possible you picked too early?
I have had Hoople’s for the past few years. Some years, it was bland, other years, it was excellent. They tasted honeyed but more balanced than just sweet.
This year, some of them have dropped for the past few days. Seeds were only medium brown.
However, it looked like something going on. I am not sure what cause this discoloration.
Harvested this small bowl of Wickson from my tree. Last year I wasn’t sure if they would ripen in zone 7 central europe, but no problem this year. Just wow, so much sugar and acid in such a small apple. Makes almost every other apple taste bland in comparison. Unfortunately I don’t have a refractometer, but definitely the most sugar I have tasted in an apple
Wickson is one of crab apples that has gotten high praises from several members here.
I have a few small apples, but only one Centennial for a crab apple. It is nothing outstanding, unfirtunately.
It will, indeed, knock your socks off. Definitely worth trying if you like concentrated sweet-tart flavor.
November Peach. I didn’t see this one until it was too late, so it’s hard to get a good read on it. Nice looking though.
Arkansas black apples. Going to put these in the fridge for awhile to see if they ripen better.
Enterprise apples, very good this year but not many of them for past two years. I hope this tree starts to produce more in the future.
