I like it, acid sweet with good brix
Which one is this?
It’s Redlove Odysso.
Picking Sierra Beauty now. These apples are very resistant to browning after cutting or biting into them.
Wickson isn’t fully ripe yet but boy is it looking beautiful. Seedling rootstock and was only planted last year but it tried to produce an unreal amount of fruit. I thinned it somewhat and the quality is looking good. Got all the spicy/sweet/acidic Wickson flavor already, just needs a little more time.
Everyone’s apples are so pretty! And most of them are ‘new’ to me. I have a small apple world.
@Mer Your Wickson looks wonderful ! And Muscat de Venus too. I’m going to look them up. They probably won’t do well here in my climate (S.E. VA). When I see that someone growing a fruit lives in ‘beautiful fruit CA’ . . . I take my Virginia expectations down ‘a few’ notches. But it sure is fun to see and hear about all of the other apples that forum members are interested in.
A few Hawaii dropped. Based on what @scottfsmith mentioned, mine should take a few weeks before they ripen here.
The seeds were medium brown, not dark brown (hard to see from the pic). It tasted sweeter than I expected.
My Hawaii are dropping now too. My notes have the beginning of October as the ripen date here. Cummins list Hawaii ripening time as September 22 for their site. They’re at least a week ahead of me for most ripen times. Most of the dropped ones have small rot spots, so that probably explains the early drops. As I recall, they are just sweet-tart off tree and need a few weeks in cold storage to develop flavors, which seems to be the norm far all the apples I harvest.
The Hawaii that dropped were all in perfect condition. No damage of any kind except for bruises from falling!!
Those that dropped were smaller to medium. The remaining ones are large. I have only this one graft which set 6-7 fruit.
In fact, several apples have dropped i.e. Pomme Grise, Roxbury Russet, Pitmaston Pineapple. Not sure a lack of rain for over 3 weeks played a role in early drops or not.
Elstar apple. This shrubby little deer-chewed tree is my first to produce a decent amount. It set a ton of fruit this year; I culled about 2/3 and now am getting some really large apples. They already taste great , but I’m going to let them hang another ~1 week.
Nice to see another BC grower having success, congrats.
I had a fair number of my apple trees put out their first crop this year. I stripped the apples off of them, as I didn’t want such small trees fruiting so soon. I noticed yesterday that I’d missed a couple on one tree, not sure of the variety.
Quite a few of these apple trees I’ll be moving to their permanent locations in November or December. Hopefully I’ll have some nice pics to post next year.
Looking forward to seeing it!
Do you have, or have you tried Salish apples? That’s a BC variety I’m hoping to add. They’re delicious. Hopefully the tree will do well.
No I haven’t, perhaps I can get a tasting at the Salt Spring Apple Festival this weekend. They have close to 500 different varieties on display there.
Redlove Odysso (corrected) This one is probably close to ripe. My daughter, who likes sour, liked it. I found it worth eating, a little tart for me but there was decent sugar on one side. I enjoyed it more than green grocery store Granny Smith.
They just got into the shops. Evelines and Galas.
I work with a guy that is a coon hunter/dog breeder and he traps them on one property and re-locates them to another to train his dogs. He uses kool-aid packets from the dollar store (cherry, grape sweetened)… sprinkled over dry cat food (fish flavored). YMMV.
I was lucky enough to get a crop of 2 KOR this year. Tried the first one yesterday and enjoyed it. The fruit were big. The skin a pretty deep red but with some hints of orange in places. They were quite dense and heavy in hand. Flesh was firm, with just a slight crunch. A fairly sweet apple with some richness and nice aromatics. A bit more acid than I was expecting, a pleasant surprise for me. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I did mine!
KOR offers good size, texture, sugar level and disease resistance, so I will use it in breeding, to cross with late to very late red fleshed apples such as Black Strawberry, Redfield, etc.
