Asian pear prices near L.A

Sometimes they’re 8 for for 32-38$ over here but the box clearly says “Shingo”.

In my experience, Korean Giant is actually smaller than shingo.

Even in south Korea, you’ll see prices at 5-12$ a single pear. The pricier ones are bigger though. I’ve had some bigger than both my fists combined.

I could not find Dr. Powells presentation but i found enough it looks like the ripening time and color are correct that im growing shinko.

@mamuang

Do you mean russeting as defined here Russeting - Wikipedia or do you mean roughness like sand paper type skin like hosui has?

I mean browning and rough skin like Korean Giant., which is rather different from skin on a 20th Century type.

Another thing we should consider is that shinko may be like many pears and be slightly different based on location. I recall you bringing up the odd color of all my pears having a red tinge early on due to the hot temperatures. I wonder if your location has a tendency towards russeting due to colder weather or copper sprays etc. .

Amount of sun would play a role. The odd think is I would think any pears that tend to russet would me more russeted where you are as your area upis much sunnier, hotter than wher I am.

I don’t spray copper during growing season. As ling as we have a correct variety, we should be all set.

Here is my Shinko pear at my old house. I grafted this same Shinko Asian for my new house. It is 3 years old now and hopefully it will produce in a few more years.
