Bell Pear aka US84909-391

What’s your opinion on Gem? If somebody already has two dozen pears…

I got a scion of bell this spring and grafted it to my imp kieffer. It is doing well… growing nicely… over a foot of growth already with 4 shoots.

I am really growing it for scion wood this year… my kieffers are developing scaffold branches this year. Next spring going to graft bell onto some of those new scaffolds.

I need the most FB resistent pears here… may stop at keiffer, imp kieffer, bell, orient.

I just wish I could find a place to buy a tree or scion of Bell. Cummins is already sold out for 2025 and the only other place I can find it is Adams but their 5-tree minimum gets me. I only need 1 and my wife is unlikely to buy the story of buying 5 to get 1…

Scionwood of Bell should be widely available next spring. I have a tree purchased this spring and managed to get it grafted on a large callery rootstock. Both trees should produce abundant scions. tnhunter also has a graft on a larger tree and should have a few scions to trade.

Bell is a spur bearing tree that produces vegetative spurs on wood about 1/2 inch diameter. You can graft the 1/2 inch wood with a bark graft with high levels of success. Spurs then grow and produce new wood.

Grampa’s had some early this year. Be ready next winter because I think they sold out relatively quickly.
