Best strawberries in Southern California

I went to two of their stores today and they had just a few plants of Seascape, and one of them had a few bare roots. But none were Albion or Chandler. I personally want to plant bare root now and not spend the extra cash for filling the bed and wait for large plants from the store, so I went ahead and bought 50 bare root Albion for $44 from a nursery in Oregon. I sadly could not find any from California. I’ll probably pick up some Chandler plants later on in the season but will plant those elsewhere.

The reason I recommended the 1 gallon pots is that is the bearing size for Spring/Summer. The small ones are planted in the fall, September, to get the right size for bearing fruit. I would recommend thinning most berries until the plant are good sized, and you should be set up for a good harvest next Spring/summer.

Couldn’t tell you why they claim it’s not good.

I’m just starting to see more reliable results from Albion this year and hopefully Mara De Bois as well and am planning on planting in Galetta, Earliglow (my earlier purchase rotted before I got a chance to plant it :frowning: - totally my fault), Evie-2 and Malwina.

From the ones I’ve trialed so far, Quinault has been excellent. I’d recommend trying it at the very least. I have some in partial shade and I have some in full Sun and both produced pretty much equally well TBH. Though I didn’t do any kind of controlled trial.

Btw I’m Zone 10. Still, close enough.
