It is from the Nahuatl (Aztec) word for a soft/mushy fruit (tzapotl). Since most of these things were domesticated in the Mayan/Aztec area, they often ended up with the Aztec names.

I sure hope these black sapote seedlings know what they are doing. They seem particularly seed-challenged… It’s been well over a month since they started sprouting and so far not a single one has shed the seed coat yet.
Persimmon seedlings take a long time to shed the shells also. Not a month but they take their sweet time

My seeds arrive today apparently they are already germinated so that’s sweet
I got impatient and carefully cracked a few seeds off. The leaves still looked pretty tender. I’ll be curious to see if the ones with seeds still attached end up doing better.
