Black sapote (Diospyros digyna aka D. nigra)

It is from the Nahuatl (Aztec) word for a soft/mushy fruit (tzapotl). Since most of these things were domesticated in the Mayan/Aztec area, they often ended up with the Aztec names.

I got some good Mamey from an Etsy vendor. Waited for them to be perfect ripe/still shippable before they sent me. If anyone is interested they only have sales posted when they are available tho

I sure hope these black sapote seedlings know what they are doing. They seem particularly seed-challenged… It’s been well over a month since they started sprouting and so far not a single one has shed the seed coat yet.

Persimmon seedlings take a long time to shed the shells also. Not a month but they take their sweet time

Entering hard hat area

My seeds arrive today apparently they are already germinated so that’s sweet

I got impatient and carefully cracked a few seeds off. The leaves still looked pretty tender. I’ll be curious to see if the ones with seeds still attached end up doing better.

I ordered a grafted Bernicker and Matt Snow (Matt’s Giant) from everglades.farm last month. Both trees were in good shape. My only complaint was that they topped the Matt Snow tree to get it to fit in the shipping box.
