Blackberries, Raspberries and Hybrids

Will review these as honestly as i can… My ripening dates this year are at least 2-3 weeks behind TNhunter and Zendog… Where i grow things gets less sunlight than most folks plus these past two weeks have been insanely cloudy and/or rainy. So im calling it an off year for ripening for me.

Chickasaw- Ripe here first week of July. Nice vigorous strong plants, very thorny. Berries are as big as Kiowa. Taste is of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. No mistaking how this tastes. I have about 10 plants and have decided to cut down to 2. So if u are interested feel free to PM me… i will give you nice crowns, or root cuttings…depending on how many folks want them. i will probably juice the berries on the ones i keep and maybe have an evening drink.

Kiowa- Super sweet almost too sweet for my taste. Nice large berries. I could eat a bowl of them and not even know what i ate. I will keep these going but not my favorite. No acid or complexity.

Victory- I had to do a solstice pruning. Vigor is off the charts and too much. I planted these in early 2022. Canes were insanely long and spindly almost like a very good thornless trailing variety. 2nd year they are erect and strong. Canes are massive and thick and take over the row shadowing everything. I pruned today some canes that were 20 feet long. Shame to lose that much cane length. Perhaps this is better though…we will see. Production on the spindly long canes is more than the canes can handle. I have them all tied to the trellis wire. I have tasted 5 king berries that were close to ripe and they are fantastic so far. My taste is for complex… sweet with a jolt of acid. So far they are doing that. My gut is telling me that they must have tried to outdo triple crown… I removed all of my triple crown because they had a boring taste these grow more vigorous and put on more fruit than triple crown. Im learning it as i go but so far it will fill my freezer with ease. I think another week will see better ripening…but as i said earlier it will continue and continue which is what i am seeing with the berry sets… some are immature while some are ripening. I even have some flowers. This may be bad for some but impressive to me. Pics coming.

Caddo- these should be ripe for me next week. Not impressed with fruit sets… enough for me but low compared to Victory.

Ponca- mine have issues… they always have. They look like cousin IT…mini christmas trees. Im aggravated with mine. Super healthy leaves and beautiful color of leaves… But i dont see any laterals…just tight nodes on the canes.

Glencoe purple- mine look like a fail this year. Canes are like pencils from last year and fruitset was poor. Total opposite of Amethyst. I will give it another year.

Big Daddy- I saw where a guy planted 500 of them and tried them for two years…his review was that he is pulling them all. Poor taste in berry…and uneven fruit sets. He did it for U-pick. Mine still havent fruited… i dont have any hope for mine either.

Von- maybe next year. I said that last year too. Mine got alot of winter damage…where most of my others did not.

Prime Ark Horizon- Im halfway convinced that Pense sent me the wrong plants again… im over it… Will report if things change.

Im growing every variety that exists of the west coast varieties… all young and spindly. Im starting to get aggravated with trellising them…

TAMU- Im growing all of the Texas releases as well… all are growing thorny and erect as they should. Nothing to report but nasty thorns.

Crimson Night Rasp- Will be lucky if one lives. Stark sent me something from their dumpster. Will do my best with what ive got. Probably 2025 until i see a crop even if i buy new ones next year.

Honey Queen- Growing nicely… looking forward to this one.

Anne- i dont like this one at all… will likely remove.

Double Gold- im reading you guys reports and will likely add this one…

Cascade Gold- looking forward to this one alot… have not seen a bad report yet.

Cascade Delight- best red rasp that i have tasted so far. Its big and tasty. Makes me wonder why i grow smaller and less tasty ones…

English Thornless- totally boring to me.

Joan J- boring to me.

Healthberry- I hope its worth it. This is Clarks Family Heirloom. My goodness its nasty growing… its ripening now. Dont grow this unless you read the directions. Its like Victory but it suckers and it has the nastiest thorns that you have ever seen. Big mistake putting this in my row. This needs a mountainside.

Everettberry- From one of our members here…another family heirloom. Nice big tasty berry old timey flavor. My gut tells me its a seedling of Darrow or Lawton or something in that genre. Survives the cold winters of Maine for decades… Grows tough and proud and suckers like crazy. Will likely move some of these to wild plantings or near fences. These dont need to be cultivated.

more to come…its that time of year.

I was kind of under the impression most of the yellow cultivars were similar to Anne…raspberry flavor with much less/no tartness.

I have been doing some youtubing and reading stuff about Double Gold and you guys have convinced me. I think on Houzz and early years on this forum some folks gave them fairly poor reviews and that kind of stuck with me…

Interesting is that Double Gold doesnt really need trellis? Looks to be a compact plant and that may be handy for some folks.

Also in this video and if you watch his previous ones…he talks about Royalty purple rasp… and that he is removing them. Says that they are no good. But everyone likes Double Gold which he is filling his bed with.

Picked a few Niwot yesterday. Flavor was pretty good and nice berry size. I also have Ohio Treasure which was completely flavorless. Hopefully it improves.

Good intel! Most of the old posts say that Niwot is flavorless…they used to say that about Ohio Treasure a couple of years ago… seems the old reviews arent totally accurate for everyone.

Nice looking crop!

A slightly underripe double gold is just about my favorite berry. Sweet, light, bit of tart honey. Super sweet when they get to full pink.

I hope you get crimson night going. I enjoy them a lot.

I ordered them today… does yours stay short and compact like the video?

NONE of mine are compact at the moment, they all need a good trimming.
I would say its a smaller plant than caroline.

Probably we are seeing the floricane crops… and the primocane crops are cut off.

Final question- are the floricane and primocane crops the same? Is one better than the other?

(I know some folks with everbearing like to cut things to the ground sometimes and only do one crop).

I am going to buy some kiwi gold too i think… i forgot i wanted them and gave up looking last year. The old threads say that its a good one to grow too.?

Kiwi Gold was my son’s favorite. Said it was the best fruit he ever ate. I will always have one because of that.

Like all yellows its small, more delicate. Can use some midday shade, leaves crisp up in strong sun.

I ordered Bristol. Thanks for the information. Still thinking about another blackberry plant for next year. I was at a friends house yesterday and he grows Apache. It was absolutely loaded with blackberries and they were really good.

Apache is off patent… so to the academics its ‘outdated’. It has gained some popularity on ebay and etsy and other places because folks can propagate and sell it now.

Large berry, very good taste… erect and early ripening… Can handle parts of FL and TX heat…as well as cold hardy to PNW and Mid Atlantic… it is very worth growing…

I think some cultivars like this are worth finding a spot for in case there is a nasty summer (like we are having now).

Hard to find a bad review for Apache. But also very few reviews as U of Ark has released a ton of cultivars since its release and nobody talks about it much.

Here is a kind of decent video about Apache. Starts ripening 2nd week in June in Z6B

Victory top Caddo Bottom.

Same ripening date for me…im late here. These are the king berries which ripen a few days before the others.

Very poor conditions this year- drought then patches of rain and pure clouds for the past week…

Caddo is very enjoyable, sweet with a tinge of acidity.
Victory- A little sweeter and much more acid.

Caddo has a smaller fruit set and less druplets but plumper.

Neither bled onto my hands.

Here is an heirloom that i found a few years ago… it was in some brush and full of snakes and ticks and other noises.

Some kind of seedling but the berries are long. Perfect druplets and they have a classic blackberry taste. This is the first fruit for me and production is small on small canes… primocanes are big and thick and thorny. So next year should be a bumper crop. Fruit sets are nice for being young.

Can any berry experts help me with my “tulameen” raspberry? I am having wilting and die off of the canes.

-planted 2022. Established as expected. Some floricane damage was noted after winter. The floricanes leafed out but looked sickly and eventually yellowed and did not produce any berries

  • primocanes with initial healthy growth. When primocanes reached around 4 feet or so some began to appear sick. Starting with yellowing off the bottom leaves and progressing to wilting.

  • soil is sandy loam. We have been in drought. None of the other raspberries or blackberries along the trellis look like they are in drought stress. I have given some supplemental water

  • no sign of cane borers near the top of the plant like I see on Google images

  • for reference a Joan j next to tulameen has been very vigorous and without issue

Joan j for reference

A hand full of nice plump sweet illini hardy.

Not an expert opinion., Combination of high heat and drought will make the tips and leaves sacrifice themselves to save the crown. You will see alot of this in the forums and browning tips of leaves.

Your Joan J has a denser crown area and more foliage and shades itself

More leaves and more establishment…better ability to protect itself against the heat.

Try giving a full mist in the evenings as if it were a nice cool rain and see if that improves things until the heat subsides.

Planted April 2023. Wow

LI_hobby_grower: I tried growing Tulameen and Chilliwack many years ago on level ground and had the same results as you. This variety seems to be susceptible to root rot. Even with sandy soil and drought, a wet winter and supplemental water may be too much for Tulameen. We had to resort to raised beds to grow red raspberries long-term.

Joan J planted this spring… blossoms developing early July.

And a couple root shoots up already.
Growing like a weed… might be a keeper.
