Oh yes please! I wanna do some breeding work for the warmer regions.

Dare I ask… might you be able & willing to root me some primocane-fruiting blackcaps? Compensated, of course!

Ohio Treasure is the only one that i am growing… just for the novelty of it.

I am honestly only interested in lost cultivars and impossible to find ones… i have no real desire for named ones or easy to purchase.

I think i got my Ohio Treasure from Hirts for a few bucks.

Edible Landscaping has them for $6.

I tried them once. I received an itty-bitty plant that soon died despite looking healthy initially. I just checked, they only have that size right now.

Edit:

I checked again, they had a larger size and I went for it. Ohio’s Treasure together with Double Gold and Crandall Currant. Now all that’s left is to get Niwot.

I’d love to get Drew’s Sterling Black, but it looks like that one will have to wait. Baby steps. :slightly_smiling_face:

Floricanes in my area decline rapidly after fruiting, especially red and black raspberry canes. I don’t think they contribute much to the berry patch after harvest. I train the primocanes by November, so the floricanes are pruned out before then.

We have had a few nice rains so far in July… my Illini Hardy produce good berries longer with a little rain.

Is Royalty a Primocane or Floricane-bearing variety? I’ve seen conflicting information on my searches.

I’d like to try growing some good-quality purples, but not every variety has that info stated explicitly. Are there any good primocane purples?

Related question… I’ve seen several people express a preference for Floricane types, ¿Is there any particular reason for that?

(In my case, floricanes usually require winter chill to bear but primocane types don’t have that limitation, which is why I prefer them).

royalty are heavy bearers but taste best when picked red. they have a late floricane crop.

I grow Royalty. Of the 4 raspberries that I grow (Anne, Caroline, Prelude, Royalty), it’s my least favorite. I do like it but it is a bit bland when fully ripe (purple). Very prolific floricane bearing.

For me it would be to avoid most of the SWD pressure. I never realized it was as big of an issue in my area prior.

I eat the fruit and poo in a flower pot the next day. Leave outside and nature does the rest. Seeds will sprout next year. This is for Travis.

Pictures of results from my seed growing method. The one with a few is from a few purple raspberries. The others are thornless blackberries.

Here is my blackberries by the gallons. Grow like weeds insanely productive. Taste wonderful. These will fill my freezers if i can stop eating them all.

I like an early ripening…a mid ripening and a late ripening… i walk my orchards daily…sometimes several times daily… personally i like picking something every time i walk.

I dont like Triple Crown, I dont like Chester and i dont like most of the U of Ark varieties. All are boring to me taste wise. I do like Prime Ark Horizon and i like Kiowa.

I am going to grow all of the west coast blackberries and hybrids just because everyone says they wont grow here… they say its either too hot or too cold… bah humbug to those Goldilocks naysayers.

Doing the best? These. I got them from eastern Europe. I like things that grow like weeds and are happy to give me fruit for very little effort. The leaves are all pristine, the canes are strong and the berries taste great. All i have to do is trim them. The canes will get 30 feet in a season if i let them. 5 canes would fill your freezer i think.

I just like growing lots of things to be honest with you. Thank you for getting me interested in Pears… I have learned alot from your posts on them.

well i got some berries sizing up on Colombia giant, triple crown and Chester. ive never had any of them as they arent hardy above the snow here and no one i know grows blackberries because its too cold. so far Colombia giant is sizing up the quickest so it should be the 1st i try. all will be 1st crop berries so the comparison should be fair. ill post results here.

A possibility if u do not want trellis wires.

Tie canes to a post.

Nice idea for interplanting between fruit trees. Or to make ‘berry trees’.

12 gallons over the past two weeks and no end in sight… i like that it has such a long window…may last another month or so. Canes were young on this harvest I planted them in Spring 2022. Next year should be mind boggling. Very prolific and abundant.
