Blackberries, Raspberries and Hybrids

This grower is asking what happened to their berries. They state that they irrigate on a timer. I believe that overwatering in high heat causes the berries to cook and explode but its not happened to me.

I suspect they will get many answers otherwise though.

mine look like that too here in Texas. I thought it was from underwatering and also being fried in the sun

my primocane crops are coming in now - stark black gem and horizon
the horizon seems to be extra productive on pcanes, some are ripe now and some are still flowering, so that should be an extended pcane crop
most of my fcane crops have been done for a while now

Apologies for a very late response . . . I’ve just been browsing this thread.

I’ve got Niwot. I could never get more than a small primocane crop, but the floricanes are extremely productive. And the flavor is good.

Yes, canes will grown like crazy in late summer / autumn. I cut them back to ~5’. Basically I treat them like a floricane variety.

Edit: Some pics taken today (7/8/25). This is maybe 1/2 way through the harvest season.

Planted this cane around May and it actually produced a berry for me. This is kiwi gold. Is anyone else growing this variety?

I got it from my extension’s plant sale around mother’s day. I’m happy to send you a cane. I bought 9 different rubus and a lot of seeds too. The seeds didn’t sprout (my fault) and 1 of the canes has died but the others are doing fine. I can pm you the varieties if you’re interested.

To send raspberries, is it best practice to tip root them and send one of the canes like that or to separate out a cane from the base?

My blackberries are starting to ripen in zone 6b. This is the 2nd season they have been in the ground and the plants are loaded with berries, so I’m very happy about that. The Triple Crown primocanes which came up this spring were very thick, about 3/4" in diameter. I purchased a wider bird netting this year but have been lazy about cutting it to size and draping it over the patch. The shade cloth is still in place from when we had mid-90s for highs. The birds don’t seem to have found the blackberries yet. Maybe the shade cloth is helping to hide the berries from above the patch…

The wild blackberries around the farm are beginning to ripen. We leave for vacation on Saturday and will be gone all next week which will probably be peak ripening time!

I’ve been picking wild black rasps past few days, there’s a few yellow/orange plants in one campground I picked. I have one of the orange plants on my deck I transplanted this spring. I want to get one of the yellows in the fall, I didn’t realize they were different shades when I took the one.

I personally prefer separate, rinsed off canes from the base during dormancy. That’s me though. It also prevents bugs from moving around

I found another wild oddity, purple raspberries! Just one cane with a few small ripe fruit. This area has wild black and red so it could be a hybrid. Tasted like a mix of red and black.

Victory on Left… Loganberry and Newberry on Right.

Bad year for Logans for me but they taste good. Newberry still coming on… Strange year for Victory. I pruned them way way too hard and most of the berries are not shaded at all this year. Lesson learned.

Not my thing but interesting.

Your Logan is the right color (for fully ripe) but is a completely different shape from mine and those that TNHunter has posted.

Yes these are from my lower canes that did not get winter kill… only a couple dozen fruits from damaged canes not to mention rcb… so smaller berry than last year for sure. I was going to prune them out but didnt mind a few fruits instead of a blank.

Anyone growing marionberries in Maryland or Virginia or a similar zone seven or eight situation?

I am, I planted them this spring. I’ve heard I’ll need to protect them in the winter

Lets play a game called “who has the ugliest plant”. I win. Between the poor setup, not enough pruning, japanese beetles, and the artificial sugar spray i used for SWD-- they are hideous. Got lots of fruit though!
