Joan J planted in spring is ripening. Mild, sweet flavor. Nice for sure (especially the lack of thorns), but I like Caroline more as it packs a much bigger raspberry punch.
What causes raspberries to form short/squat/small? Caroline’s are forming very small berries right next to the perfect shaped Joan j

Primocane berries on a stark niwot that i thought might have been mislabeled due to 3 years no primocane berries but they’re starting this year.
Columbia giant from a small plant.
Big berry! Almost looks like a mulberry.
root rot. too much irrigating.
Lol. Just saw this on the other thread and popped over here b/c of the fireblight discussion back at post 2499. I’m pretty sure mine did have fireblight. Maybe yours too?
I call this one Mabel after my Grandmother. A wild selection growing on her property. Mabel passed in 1973.
thats awesome that you grow something she grew. any chance i could trade for some cuttings of it? im only a half zone colder so they should do fine here.
I can share or trade root cuttings come spring.
ok. thanks.
Geez, finally caught up with this thread, took like 3 hours of fast reading.
Dang, that a mighty fine looking berry! Can you give it a taste review? Possibly compared to something like Triple Crown or another similar berry as a standard? I love large berries, so Columbia Giant has long tempted me, but my problem is I’ve been on the fence about its flavor.
I picked it not ripe so it was sour still. I gave it just about 2-3 days after turning but it may need more time than my older university of Arkansas ones.
I have a couple more going so I’ll try to wait as long as i can but there’s heavy animal pressure here and it feels like we all want to taste the new things together lol
Somewhat related question, does anyone know what ploidy level Newberry has? It’s parentage is a confusing mix of diploids, tetraploids, hexaploids, and who knows what else. @Fusion_power @Favman @krismoriah @Richard any of y’all know?
For me, Columbia Giant has tasted the best when the berries just start to lose their shine, usually a day or two after they detach easily. Before that, they are a little tart but the flavor is still good.
A little hard to tell from this pic, but the two berries on the very bottom are what I aim for.
Just tasted my first ever yellow raspberry, Anne. I planted it from its little pot the first or second week of June this spring and it just made a few berries. I really liked them. They were sweet and had a nice flavor. I am looking forward to lots more next year. There are still a few berries to ripen on the canes.

thats funny. they are just ripening here as well. with this dry heat they are delicious. got a handful of colombia stars as well.
" what ploidy level Newberry has? "
Hi, Looking at its pedigree, I would say it is Hexaploid (6x).
No knowledge, only speculation. There is a high probability it is tetraploid. Why? Because with the mix of parents, the likelihood is high that a diploid was crossed with a hexaploid which would give a tetraploid. If it is not tetraploid, next best choice is hexaploid.
Pretty sure it is Hexaploid. One Parent is a 4x Raspberry x Austin thornless (8x) which gives a 6x plant. The other parent has Logan and Marion in its background, both 6x.
