That is a great idea, I hadn’t considered that there could be a search issue. There’s a way that the present thread can be split by the year but we are going to need the assistance of @admins to do that for us.

are yall saying the forum search function doesnt work after the thread gets longer or that manually searching becomes impractical after a certain length? the former shouldnt be an issue.

I remembered a comment that I read in this thread that I believed was @krismoriah about how they prune for floricane growing. I went to “search within this topic” and it will only give results for the first part of the thread because there are so many entries.
It’s hard to scroll through as well, because of the length.
I got around it by using google to search, and I did find the post I was looking for, but then I thought maybe we should start a new thread…

I’m really impressed with the performance of my primocane Caroline red raspberries this year. We had some rain during warmer weather a few weeks ago, and there was some rotting of very ripe fruits then. Now that it’s cooler and raining almost every day, the rotting is gone; and, as a bonus, there are no SWD fruit flies. I can wait until the berries are fully ripe before harvesting them. The temperature stays below 50F most days lately, but the plants are still growing, flowering, and ripening fruit. It will be interesting to see how long this will last. The berries aren’t as tasty as they were during warm, dry weather; but they still taste good and are reasonably firm. With the constant washing from the rain, I don’t bother washing the harvest but place the berries on a cookie sheet right away and freeze them.

I have a few nights coming up where it will be lows into the upper 30’s. Then back into the 40’s at night and upper 50’s to low 60’s during the day. Should I worry about bringing these inside my unheated shed or just let them ride until it gets in the lower 30’s?

Most of my raspberries in half-whiskey barrel containers have done great in zone 6b but I’m not getting much fruit from Double Gold in the fall. It has been fruiting much more reliably on the floricane in the summer. I feel that part of the issue in the fall is it ripens very late, almost too late. I may give this variety away next year even though I like the pink lemonade like flavor and the color.
Well it looks as if the idea for a new thread is a bust. So i will continue here.
Sweet Giant is back in stock at Gurneys… i think some folks were wanting to try it.

Yes, I suggest to keep going with this thread for the time being. I’m sure that all of our excellent @admins have busy lives and just haven’t had a chance to see about splitting the thread at post 489/490 to break 2023 into its own thread, 1777/1778 to break 2024 into its own thread and the rest of the thread into one with 2025 in the title.

I dont see that happening really. Nadja Sweet Cherry has a much larger following than all of the cane berries…and so do Jujubes.
When i quoted your post i was alerted that i cannot even mention admins… so theres that…
If anything i still want a Permaculture or something of that nature Category. We discussed it years ago and it never happened… however Cider gets its own category.
Do brambles deserve their own category? Sure. So do Stonefruits and on and on.
But on the other hand i do kind of like the Easter Egg format of the forum… you never know what some of the kooks will post on the lounge and when or what someone new will start a whole new topic on that has been discussed 100 times. Or which bored member will start 5 threads to flex on any given day.
Keeps it interesting at least for me…

random update from me:
I tried a primocane Prime-Ark Freedom blackberry yesterday, and It tasted wonderful.
I have therefore decided that since I don’t like the floricane PAF berries, and that they are a stink bug magnet, I will cut all PAFs to the ground every winter and just try to get october/november berries from them here in Texas

Deer got to the PAF primocanes pretty bad this year unfortunately, but I recall them being good previously. The cooler fall temperatures really help.
Primocanes on my Bababerry raspberry have been producing since the beginning of September and look like they’ll keep it up until frost, hopefully at least month from now. Not a ton of berries, but they’ve tasted really good. Primocane fruiting varietiesare the way to go if the season is long enough for them.

Just out of curiosity I compared Sweet Giant to Caddo. Caddo isn’t as sweet as I throught, having less soluble solids than Navaho. Everyone has their own preferences for taste, but the 11% soluble solids Navaho has up to 13% is what I like best. I may be swapping out my Caddo for Sweet Giant next year.
If anyone is interested in Charlotte strawberries, I saw them return for sale as well last week. I purchased more than needed this time in case of fallout. This past spring they had unfortunately sold out by the time I needed replacements.

Black Gem (aka. Midnight Jewel) is my favorite tasting of the primocane fruiting blackberries. I just dont want blackberries this time of year myself. I think i am just done with all of them.
Fall Red/August Red is my favorite red rasp at the moment. The primocane and floricane fruits are both just ‘better’. Dessert quality as far as i am concerned.
I still havent gotten to try (the real) Josephine except for one berry. The plants i received needed too much therapy to get them in ground so hopefully next year.

How does fall red compare with Caroline? When you say dessert quality, do you mean sweeter? Wondering if I need another raspberry…
Will you be selling your black gem? I would love to buy a piece.
on the black gem, do you get any tastes of like apple or anything in it? I could swear I could detect some other fruit in the taste
it’s been months since I’ve tasted one though so I could be crazy

I had to go out of town for a week, a friend suggested I get a couple of kiddie pools and put all my blueberries and other container plants in them and fill it with water so they would survive while I was gone
They’ve done so well in there that I don’t want to move them now
Including these mulberry cuttings that I rooted last year!

I have Fall Red/August Red which is new to me and i have it near Heritage and Caroline etc as they are all in the category of thorned and Fall Bearing as well as pcane fruiting. All in same row… all had same conditions… all went thru severe drought and heat. Heritage which is a nice classic raspberry and Caroline which takes that up a notch were not as sweet nor as tart as Fall Red/August Red… the taste when compared side by side was clearly evident. If i did not have Fall Red/August Red then i probably would have been much happier with Caroline as I didnt know what i was missing. Dessert Quality is probably a term that I shouldnt use but it to me this year in my conditions was the epitome of a red raspberry.
Black Gem/Midnight Jewel is available at Stark Bros… and Black Gem is being phased out to market Midnight Jewel.

No not here i havent. Sweet and then Acid… which is my personal preference of a wallop of sweet and then tart. (complex). I dont grow most of my things for maximum production. I thin canes and prune for the highest quality. I do not have the most ideal growing conditions in the world… so i have to do the best with what i have to work with.
