I believe you mentioned thornless primocane blackberries. Thanks if so! I just ordered some lol. Id never heard of them until this morning while reading thread comments. Very cool. Thanks again.
Anybody have an idea on what is causing the new leaves on my Blackberry/Raspberry hybrid to get small and brittle then drop off ? It is also happening on most Blackberry seedlings.
Thanks.
Thank you, and it’s no problem. If you have any cool currant or gooseberry hybrids those would be cool. Any yellow black raspberry, or odd yellow raspberry, purple raspberry, creeping raspberry, Himalayan raspberry, any white blackberry like snowbank or polar, salmonberry (both colors), crimson night raspberry, rubus illecebrosus (Japanese and very weird, sometimes called strawberry raspberry), any odd rubus or ribe. I guess I also kind of want more kiwi vines, some sea berries, I wouldn’t mind more honey berries. Or if you have sunchokes. I also want hybrids like boysenberry, tayberry, and all the other lesser known hybrids. I feel like at this point most of the things I want are on so many different websites and shipping is always about the cost of a plant or two anyway.
I have also been wanting jujubee and pomagranite but pomagranite does terrible in 6b/7a.
Where are you at? If you have some stuff, start thinking of what you can trade or can propagate to trade next spring. Lots of people have interesting things and if you plan ahead you can make some nice trades.
I think @krismoriah is overwhelmed by requests at this point.
There’s a nice discussion of kiwis in zone 6 and 7 if you search for it. Also the regional chat for MD/VA area had a discussion about them.
I’m in PA. And yeah I definitely have some stuff to trade. I have red, black, yellow raspberries, yellow black raspberries, some huge blackberries, tons of currants and gooseberries, seeded grapes, sumac, prickly pear, lots of figs. I could give cuttings of apple. Peaches and plums all have leaf curl. Pears all have fire blight right now. I have elderberry, chokecherry, Viking berry, Nanking cherry, tons of herbs, getting passion fruit, working on persimmon and pawpaw.
Not really.. its just that other than a small handful of things that i grow or have grown are available.. as i have purchased them myself. Newberry, Siskiyou and Kotata are the things on this thread that are not really available really and i have provided them to lots of members on here so there should be plenty of source material for them out there.
I just gave/sold Illini Hardy to a member on here.. so he is the source going forward.
Victory or whatever it is.. i have provided that to alot of folks also. I think its a cross of Triple Crown and Natchez or something like that..its neither of them but better than both if that makes sense.
Thorny Loganberry- i posted a link for it and i think some folks on here bought them.. other than that they are extinct as far as i can tell.
Shultz- As far as i know i am the only person who bought them from Edible Landscaping… i have no idea why they are out of stock. I will probably give one plant to someone to carry them forward on here if they dont show back up on their nursery..
So i really have nothing worth trading or sharing that isnt already available or is really worth fooling with.
Just as a reminder for the folks posting trade offers, you’d be better served doing that in the “trading post” category. And I second @benthegirl let’s not swamp @krismoriah with requests
yes, people definately need to pay ti forward more lol.
Anyway i ended upgetting twilight as my next one.
Does anyone have any idea what kind of stratification arctic raspberry seeds might need?
I bought 5 Caddo plugs today to finish out my 3rd row.
Lots. And scarification.
I’ve not grown that one but Rubus in general takes some work to germinate.
Hi, Rubus seeds are easy to germinate if you use my method see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naiDVsS37p4
Thanks for the resource! I’ve been trying to find a good youtube/video source for breeding, scarification, sowing, etc. for when I get down that rabbit hole.
i am going to try this 7 day method and then add in 1 day of soaking in water with an air stone which can often bypass cold stratification. we’ll see. if that doesnt work i’ll do a 60 day in the fridge stint
I have been germinating seeds that take months. I’ll try your method on a few different species (purple flowering raspberry, rubus caesius, etc.) and report back. Thank you for the info!
I have used the bird method and had nearly 100 percent success in the rubus and various other berry germination. (fresh seed).
Dried seeds or those bought from various sources… have much less success rate..or zero.
The bird method-
Fresh Seed Consumed- Wash seed in water as a bird would remove the fruit.
Seed in stomach- 4hrs dollar store H2O2.
Defecation- Warm moist stratification- seed placed in moist coffee filters in baggies.
Dormancy- When winter time comes place seed in cheese drawer or similar spot in fridge in moist cold environ.
Spring- Sew seed way before spring and set outside and let nature wake the seed up.
There are much faster processes if a person has a greenhouse or wants to tend seedlings all winter.. however this timeframe is what works for me and nature and has for many millions or however long birds have dispersed seed.
Rubus have double dormancy to ensure that they do not take over the planet..and compete with themselves. So the many factors of nature decrease germination naturally and wisely so.
There are many variations of stratification and scarification but the simplest one works best for me and the time frame i am fine with. YMMV.
While we are on subject of propagation i see on my social media forums that folks are sticking cuttings now of their prunings of brambles as well as fruit trees… something about ‘Spring’ makes folks think that is the time for rooting.
The time is late summer.. or thereabouts for sticking cuttings/layering.. . Primocanes not floricanes.. and they are at their peak of hormones and vigor for doing so. This can be achieved by cambium rooting versus callusing and note rooting.
However this isnt needed at all with most all Rubus rooting from root cuttings..however most folks are scared to death to dig a root cutting in fear of killing the plant or something.
Mass propagation is very easy to do with just putting a plant in a tub and letting the tub fill full of roots and then trimming them all in late Fall and setting the plant back in the tub to produce roots again.. and setting all root cuttings in pots to overwinter then produce new plants in the spring. Versus rolling the dice on cuttings.
If for nothing else its much easier and simpler to grow via seeds or one of the simplest methods of propagation of Rubus that nature has provided it to do so. Cuttings are not one of its natural methods..whereas tip rooting and root cuttings are… however it will root via layering as a natural method as well.
Dormant cuttings taken now or thereabouts face challenges that may be resolved with the proper media and dipping in bleach, or H2O2 or various other method to ensure fungus and bacterias etc do not interfere. Also most people want to put under grow lights or full sun etc as they want them to grow like tomatoes or something. The process of rooting via nodes versus cambium as well as providing leaves and possibly flower or fruit on dormant floricanes overwhelm the process needed for rooting and of course the success rate will decline. A dark cool place is much better for rooting dormant cuttings of rubus as well as other things so that the root formation preludes the other processes.
YMMV on all of this but it is a good first step in success versus trial and error.

update 4/4/2026 - caught this guy on a Brison blackberry leaf. I like his eyes
a lot of the flowers on a lot of my varieties are black in the middle. I’m assuming that means the flower bud died from the frost after the false spring we had several weeks back
Interesting, I see this on some strawberry flowers and wasn’t sure what to attribute it to. Thanks.
My Kiowa are blooming nicely today. About half bloom now.
Illini hardy not blooming yet.. but will be soon.
Got my Indiana berry order today.. 3 Caroline, 3 Anne Golden. Will get those planted ASAP.
