From the patent, it said it can have 5 leaves along with the usual 3.
I’m looking for one too what a scavenger hunt… i think half of the raspberries from Restoring Eden is mislabeled hence why I’m trying to figure out what i have exactly.
I think last year i got Polka as Polana because internet searches make my last year’s Polka look exactly like polana. So now I’m also looking for polana cause that was delicious
Dont watch this if you are a fan of Heritage… (which i am… i think if you have room for both that Heritage is a fine berry… but Caroline does things just a bit better).
I trust Stark/Gurneys/Hartmanns for the most part as they all sell tissue culture plugs and seem to have good business models as far as sending true to name. YMMV.
Nourse is probably the most rock solid option however… they are very professional in every way that they can be.
With that being said… anyone such as myself that started 2 Caroline plants likely has 100 to spare… as it suckers like crazy. The patent is expired so i see no reason that you couldnt post in the trade section of this forum…
One Green World’s price of $20 per plant is ridiculous…and shameful… i think.
I’m not entirely convinced that my caroline isn’t caroline yet though
it is more heat tolerant than my heritage red, and the berries actually taste good unlike my heritage red… although honestly the two plants do look extremely similar side by side
I know the feeling… I ordered from them and maybe it was from having the plants shipped to a friend’s place where he unpacked them while we were away…but I think only two plants of my wide selection that I bought were labeled. Don’t really know if I should be happy or disappointed with them; ordered 2 mulberries, and got 3 with only one labeled. Still can’t figure out if I have 2 Susquehanna Pawpaws now or lucked out and the Chappell is what made it.
Found out Caroline is the daughter of Heritage so it would make sense that Caroline does everything better than Heritage. I made a thread about what varieties are from which and i don’t know how to link it on here but i made it?
I may change my mind on Ruby… its not what i thought it was. I try to do my due diligence before sharing information but sometimes i get ahead of myself.
Ruby was released by Nourse years ago and is still in the trade at some nurseries…but it doesnt look worthy of growing compared to others that i grow currently…so to me no real sense in going backward.
Well this is a surprise. My hybrid is producing a second crop. Never done that before. My experience with blackberries is limited to this hybrid, logan and marion. Is a second flush common? Might it give me a clue as to parentage? Not complaining at all…
Not sure if it may happen with other plants but i know with citrus, if they’re not happy and they think they’re gonna die, they’ll put out flowers like there’s no tomorrow. It may be the same concept with other plants
You are right the repeat flowering canes are ugly, those canes are the ones that flowered and fruited already and should be dying over the winter, the replacement canes, lower and shorter, look like they should. It will probably be wise to prune out the repeat bearing canes and show the plants some love. The two other people who had this variety have passed and their kids tore them out to sell the homes. Its a lovely burden to have…and THANK YOU for extrapolating it to unhappy citrus. Lots to think about there.
The deer have been munching on my new Kiowa, Newberry, and a little on the marion. The thornless Victory plants were untouched. I decided it was time for newest patch to be trellised. Row on the right are all Victory.
So far the Marion has had the best flavor, not big, but it has what I like out of boysenberry in it. I now know the meaning of a two-bite blackberry with Kiowa. Got some smaller berries off one Victory plant but the plants are a little young to know much.
The Victory had an interesting flavor, couldn’t quite place it. Maybe a touch of wild Himalayan flavor.
When they mature the berries will be much larger and they will taste alot better IMHO. Year 1 kinda floppy. Year 2 Semi Erect. Year 3 Erect…
I agree there is something to the taste… I can also taste that wild strong berry in there somewhere but it has a pleasant sweetness also. Makes wonderful jam that has that nice blackberry flavor punch to it.
I will take a pic of mine this weekend… my 3 little rows look like Little Shop of Horrors… Its my most vigorous plant by a country mile.
