Blackberries, Raspberries and Hybrids

Autumn Bliss likely wont be around much longer at nurseries… very popular in the UK but not so popular here in the US.
This is a pic from the Rasp group on FB… grower lives in Z4/5

Autumn Britten is pretty hard to find… as well as Vintage and Kokanee (gurneys for now) those are all doing well overseas but not well here in the US.

I know its hard to keep up with, let alone grow all of the raspberry varieties. So most of them fail to become popular and sell well at nurseries…then they are gone.

Not sure what is going on with the new USDA blackberry releases… if they dont show up this spring… im guessing they will all be sold by EMCO CAL overseas. Not sure if even Finnberry raspberry will become available.

Ive been waiting on Addison Red Rasp for a year… im getting it for sure if it shows back up.

my not prelude looks alot like that autumn bliss in berry shape and size. i got the plants from Indiana berry and they never carried that one there so likely not that. i think it might be polana as its a very early fall bearing rasp. and indiana carries them. not super sweet. more of a real rasp. taste like heritage.

Or if you dont tip or prune and train laterally… you can do this.

Floricane crop of PA45.

Only way to do this is to not tip or prune until pcane tips are spent.

Himbotop - This new variety is a result of a controlled cross between the fall raspberry variety ‘AUTUMN BLISS’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 6,597) and the summer raspberry variety ‘RAFZETER’ (not patented in the United States; sold as HIMBO QUEEN).

So himbotop is the upgrade Autumn Bliss i presume.

Zenith nursery in des moines, Washington sold vintage. Not sure if they deliver though. Last i checked, they had 2 more

Red Mammoth Raspberry… from Canada. I dont see many posts on this one… i think Gurney’s sells it. Floricane cropper… ripens late July into August. The grower says it has no complexity just sweet mostly. Hardy to Z2/3 he says. Doesnt interest me, and likely why its not very popular as it would ripen at peak SWD for me. May interest some but im scratching it off my list.

Maya’s Gardens sells alot of the obscure PNW varieties…and where i got Lewis, Chilcoten and Kiwi Gold… they also sell via Home Depot online sometimes and also Ebay and Etsy and probably other places… very pricey $40-$50 per plant… but rasps propagate easily and some of those varieties will be gone from the market before long…if not already. They sell via container and free shipping…so clipping roots when they arrive is very easy and 1 plant can net 10 fairly easily. Just saying its doable not recommending anything.

Where is that at? Google takes me to landscaping.

Nvm, it’s online. Just saw the website

Vintage is the only cultivar to be said to have ‘outstanding flavor’ when compared to many others it looks like.

I am talking to another member on here via PM about his Josephine which likely isnt true to name. On the below link it also states it has a very late ripening berry. I have a friend in the PNW that grows it and he said some years the frost gets it before its ripe…so very few people with true to name Josephine im guesssing.

Crimson Night is said to have ‘mild flavor’ I agree… Nice berry but it isnt anything special.

Polka and Himbo Top as well as Joan J also reported to have ‘mild flavor’

Cascade Delight- Excellent Flavor, large berry…excellent disease resistance…i agree.

Tulameen- excellent flavor but very susceptible to root rot…so thats probably not a wise choice.

Killarney ticks all the boxes of excellent flavor and resistance to disease. Smaller softer berry though.

Looks like i need to try Vintage…

This is 10 yrs old and from the PNW…so take that into consideration… of course.

i have polka and i can say its not what i consider a good raspberry. to me the best for that real raspberry flavor is heritage. Tnhunter said Joan j tastes similar to heritage.

I had a mislabeled polka that i think is actually polana. It died from Colorado salt water but I’m looking for another.

My Caroline from stark was delicious as well, just bought another one from them because my other new one doesn’t taste right.

To me, vintage had a fizzy pop taste. It’s very unique in that aspect.

Really not liking my Joan j, it’s just sour or bland sour to me depending on how long i let them ripen. Even though it’s thornless, i might give it away next year if it keeps it up.

I think heritage is actually a little sweeter than Joan j.
Maybe it’s because it’s first year but i can’t get any sweet flavors out of mine. Just sour

Encore is one to look at for a good thornless… very cold hardy, heat tolerant… seems to fruit from July until frost. Disease resistance also looks top notch. Lots of nurseries selling it.

Almost all descriptions say it ripens from July to August but i have seen several posters with fruit in late October (Z5,6,7)…

I planted mine this spring…but this brutal summer has taken its toll… maybe next year.

New raspberry from seed. Great flavored box from San Luis Obispo area. Seed didn’t grow so left it overwinter. This one came up. First flower this week.

My 2 logan crowns are each pushing 2 pcanes. One has grown to the top of the 7 ft tall trellis and then run over 12 ft to the right and has run off the end.

Total cane length now for the 4 canes… 44 ft.

Still no sign of red neck cane borer.

May get a good crop of loganberry next year.

my Colombia giant and star have each about 6 -7 canes. longest is 10ft. star is more vigorous of the 2 as it was only planted last aug. and has grown 2xs as fast. cane borer has touched either one so far but they were a no show this year. last year they were bad and hadn’t touched the giant at all.

@steveb4 … do you have your thornless blackberries in a protected place … so deer cant get to them ?

That nice Columbia Giant you sent me and a few Caddo… i got from another… have been destroyed by deer this year… every time they get a little green on them… the deer mow them back a little more.

It did not help that we had a bad drought this year… the deer were extra bothersome… they even ate all the growing tips and leaves off my okra this year. First time that has happened.

Looks like I will not be having any thornless blackberries.

My two Kiowa… have done much better… they took some deer browse as well (tips mostly) but not nearly as bad. They did manage to grow and produce some cane… about 3 ft tall.

They are going to be short and bushy next year… hopefully next years pcanes have better luck.

no deer here and only a occasional moose passing through. bugs or root rot are the only things that can do damage here.

anyone ever seen a thorny plant suddenly have a stretch of thornlessness?

this is my Marionberry, it randomly has about a foot where it is smooth

edit: Even the leaves on these two nodes look different, they look like Brazos or Rosborough or something. Wonder if I should try to air layer one of these nodes…

That’s good to know. I’m about to order one. How is your crop this year?
