Blackberries, Raspberries and Hybrids

It might be worth growing some sweet alyssum along your rows. I’ve used it to attract various wasps, particularly parasitic ones, and it seems to really help me manage aphids, etc.

I bought a pound of seed on Amazon for pretty cheap a few years back.

Hey neighbor,
I’m a little behind on trying many different varieties. I have many blackberries and raspberry ordered to see if any will work in Lufkin (about 130-150 miles SE of Plano, 120m N of Houston). Adding a little, ok a lot of humidity to the test. Should have checked around some before ordering, I have a pretty sizable order with Pense. Small plants of Mysore put out in the fall.

How did your test results turn out?

for raspberries specifically: as of right now for our area I can recommend Caroline and Fall Gold for sure, but I have a bunch more that I still don’t know about yet

Looks like Cascade Bounty red rasp is available for purchase now?

This site is confusing as this doesnt show up on their main site… and the header and link is wrong… I would definately call them or something before ordering.

Its pedigree has some tough guys in there… so i assume this would be a pretty bulletproof variety.

Gotta love these USDA releases that have been around for 20 years and nobody seems to grow them or sell them or know anything about them.

Patent expires 2/19/25
So have fun with them.

I have asked about availability. I’ll let you all know when I hear back.

" Hi there,

Good day and happy new year! Thanks for reaching out about these delicious raspberries! They ARE available for preorder and will arrive to our warehouse beginning on 1/17. We then ship out by growing zone from there. They are at a great price right now too! Here is a link to view the description of them: Red Cascade Delight Raspberry for Sale – Grow Organic.

Please let me know if you have further questions or would like help placing an order. I’m happy to assist. Have a fantastic day!"

From what I’ve gathered, grow organic does 3rd person shipping meaning, they don’t hold or keep their own plants. Instead, they ship from another company when an order comes in so they may not know as much about the plants they grow.

Did you confirm that they arent Cascade Delight?

Oops! I just sent them another email to confirm.

Response: “I (customer service agent) rely on our item description. That is something created for the product we are going to carry. Our site says it is a Cascade Bounty. We do not carry a Cascade Delight currently. Hope this helps!”

I get the feeling they didn’t quite finish up with the listing, but it will be fully incorporated onto the website soon under the Raspberries category. I’m not very familiar with this retailer but if they have historically been good about providing true to name varieties, then I think the risk is low with purchasing it on the website now. Good find, @krismoriah!

When i spoke with the owner of Organic Innovations, they told me that they ship after getting orders from Grow Organic. Which leads me to believe that they may not actually hold any plants themselves or that they don’t grow their own and are simply getting things from other suppliers to resell. With that, they may be filling in the gaps with information not given by their suppliers.

Information seems flipped since primocane = first year growth.

Given “summer” is referenced multiple places in the listing and the patent says floricane, “primocane” in the listing is probably an error.

Cascade Bounty is a floricane fruiting rasp.

I think the growing zones is also incorrect. It has Chief as a parent so it should be much more cold hardy than Z6.

Some things to consider is that in the patent description it is not recommended for market or freezing due to the size and firmness as well as acidity. So more of a candidate for jams and jellies and juices… or fresh eating. Better choices to be had i think… unless root rot is severe in your growing areas.

Cascade Harvest does just about everything better on paper. Even with a larger berry size. Suitable for shipping, market, fresh eating as well as jams and jellies and freezing.

Cascade Delight while having the largest berry of the three has less yield than Harvest.

I really enjoy Cascade Delight its very good here and dessert quality. I have Harvest ordered… i will probably pass on Bounty for now.

I take the growing zone on variety listings with a grain of salt. No one is consistent on the usage, so comparison on how cold hardy each variety is takes more research.

never thought I’d be testing out the cold hardiness of blackberries here in Texas, but here we are… I hope they make it!

Do you think Victory and Wyeberry would grow well in Oklahoma?

I dont see why not.

I’d be interested in both if you have them available. I tried to send a DM but it won’t allow me.

I think ive mentioned it before but i guess a picture is worth a thousand words.

However i have not put it to the test as my Apache is trelllised.

I guess a person could grow these as a shrub of sorts…where they didnt want to have unsightly or unwanted trellis. Or interplant between fruit trees if spacing allows.

Have you tried growing berries in a raised bed by any chance? I’ve heard/read that they only spread about a foot underground.

I want to ground all my things but don’t want them spreading. Was thinking about 17 inch raised beds or taller
