Blackberries, Raspberries and Hybrids

Just seeing if anyone on here bought Black Butte over the weekend from Planting Justice? I got a notification Saturday that they were in stock and i clicked the link that evening and they were sold out.

I dont think there are any other growers on here that grow it so im curious if anyone is going to try them.

And for you googlers… the one that Willis sells is not Black Butte its Kiowa.

For my sleuths… here is a good one see if anyone can find a blackberry bred by Dr. Lukas Fargo

Sweeter than Sweet Blackberry (probably Ponca)

and Hercules (probably Big Daddy)…

Bought a Glencoe last year. Anyone that can report on the taste?

to me Glencoe tastes like Brandywine but with only 75% of the flavor

I sold my Glencoe last year. I agree the flavor just wasn’t as good as other varieties and the berry was very soft.

@PcChip reminded me of Rudy’s Original Boysenberries sale… Im not sure if i mentioned it before or not… but…

“Recently, USDA Corvallis confirmed the authenticity of our boysenberries using DNA analysis and comparing 28 other varieties of boysenberries. Only our vines’ DNA matched the original boysenberry. Boysen Berry Farm is the only place you can buy the original boysenberry.”

This statement is on several sources on the internet by Ms. Boysen Fitzgerald also in an article in the Chico newspaper etc.

So… i guess its up to the grower to decide if Rudy’s is the best or worst or somewhere in the middle of those other 28 varieties…

My climate isnt THE best for Boysens but they dont get winter killed here and depending on how much rain i get or not during fruiting depends on the flavor here. I definately dont get the sunlight hours that California/Oregon or New Zealand get.

4 more days until they go on sale as of this writing…so you have time to decide this year if you want to try them or not.

Innovativeorganicnursery.com :face_holding_back_tears: i bought more from them and they’ve been so nice! Currently they’re the cheapest for the new raspberry variety: ruby jewel and Honey Jewel

They have an upcoming interesting business model…

They are spending a year transitioning Triple Crown blackberry and Heritage raspberry to Organic and will sell those plants on their website.

I was kind of hoping that they would release a new blackberry cultivar but i think they are just going to go with that business model of transitioning old off patent varieties for folks that must have Organic.

I can ask them if it’s in the works. Been talking to the owners on and off randomly

How many plants did you purchase? :open_mouth:

Just 2 more varieties of strawberries that i didn’t already have this time. I wanna try all the new ones. Their crowns are actually really good looking and decent sized. Some of the biggest I’ve gotten from anywhere online for some varieties actually.

For raspberries, they send them with an amazing amount of roots

That’s really cool. Looking forward to receiving raspberries from them in a few weeks. The bare root strawberries purchased from Stark Bros did well for me last year but will certainly consider ION for replacements.

I recently got a Black Raspberry and a Prime Ark Freedom I believe it’s a primocane I’m assuming is labeled as upright BB.
Reading through an old pruning book in the two. Does this look about right? Or has things changed?

Does anyone know, how sunburn resistant black raspberries are ? Do they tolerate more sun than red raspberries or blackberries, or is it about the same ? I have a place in the garden where i had planted blackberries before, but I always got fruitdamage. So I’m wondering if planting black raspberries there will give me basically the same outcome.

I’m in the high desert at 4k feet with hot dry summers. My black raspberries are by far the most hardy in regards to intense sun and heat. All of mine planted in full sun are thriving. I can’t say the same about my red raspberries.

I have never seen sunburn on my Jewel black raspberries in over 25 years.

Extremely hot weather can quicken to two days the over-ripening of black-caps, causing them to dry out and shrivel, a process that normally takes several days if the berries are not harvested in a timely manner. The berries do not drop to the ground.

Sunburn on blackberries: purple drupelets.
UV damage on blackberries: white drupelets.
Sunburn on red raspberries: lose their shine, go mushy, flavor is off.
