Blackberries, Raspberries and Hybrids

i havent really hunted it. I originally got it to pollinate Crystal White which was found by Burbank not far from Lawton. Neither are really worth growing…and not wise to experiment with wild cultivars that are much more susceptible to modern viruses and diseases.

Ebony King does all that i want for a thorned old timey taste… not to mention the plant is just so magnificent.

The Berries Unlimited lady was going to carry Lydia’s Sweet Giant but i think she lost it to Gurney’s that just calls it Sweet Giant… still waiting to see if that one is worth keeping.

Not sure I trust this label at Home Depot saying this Boysenberry plant is zone 5 hardy.

I did a quick search and most all nurseries list it as Z5…

I have no doubt that some folks in Z5 can grow it… and some cant… so it will be hard to say for sure that it does or doesnt.

Myself i had a time getting the canes to size up and i gave up on them… just small canes and small berries. Maybe they need a longer growing season like California etc has…

Did you have good sun exposure all year where you were growing the Boysenberry plant? I’m thinking rapid cold weather extreme fluctuations like there can be in the northern Plains and Midwest in winter may also be less than ideal.

the thorny boysenberry i got from starks was nothing like boysenberry, so i don’t trust any boysenberry unless it’s from the Rudy’s Original farm

I’m going to give boysenberries from Rudy’s a shot in zone 6b. Wish me luck. At the end of this season, I’ll bury the canes in heavy mulch, bring them into my unheated garage and wrap a frost blanket around the container. I’ll know in about 15 months from now if my experiment was successful. Ha.

Just got bare root Loganberries from Tractor Supply. It just so happens that I was putting a trellis up for my Giant Granadilla passion fruit seedling and was going to have alot of extra space on it. I was also going to get a dewberry as well, but I don’t think they would do well with the heat. Pretty sure the loganberries are going to struggle some too, but the spot has a few hours of dapple light, so its not full sun.

anyone ever seen or tasted Schultz Blackberry?

the only mention of it I could find was from @jtburton from many years ago

im on year 2 of growing it. Plants came in pretty weak and tiny in 2024… i got about 3 feet of growth floppy. Will cut all of those to the ground soon… so 2026 will probably have something to discuss.

$54 for one plant will likely keep most folks away from it.

I saw Crimson Giant rasp at Home Depot… $15 for a small pot.
Bottoms Nursery is about half that price.

Very cheap price on Kiowa if someone is wanting to give them a try also.

Pretty cheap prices on a couple of blueberries and some peach trees as well… however their stock is just about blown out.

Shipping isn’t available from them :frowning:

From whom? If you are referring to Bottoms they do for sure.

have you tasted a berry from it yet?

no. The plants i received were in rough shape and tiny… so took a full year just to get them healthy.

Not to me… it says they don’t delivery to my area on the shipping page

Probably best… Crimson Giant looks like a dud… my fault for mentioning it. Probably why they are pushing it at Home Depot and not many nurseries.

On the bright side i may have a couple of extra Fall Red canes that i just got in…it looks to be a good one.

Im halfway convinced that its sold as August Red by Fedco.

Can you post a photo of how the plants look when you receive them?

Either my Crimson Giant died or its one of the slowest to wake up compared to everyone else.

I was supposed to go digging around this weekend but no one stopped by to help so i couldn’t :sob: going to try to do some scratching around to see if my fall gold and double gold are still alive lol. Of all my raspberries, almost everything has sent up a sprout or few except those 3
