Blue Hawthorn (Crataegus schraderiana)

I certainly will! Our native haws here are only fit for bird food (or jam), so this should be great lol

In fact, Ken Fern, as quoted in this PFAF article on the Crataegus genus, goes a step further with praise. He claims this fruit to be among the most delicious he has ever tasted from any temperate zone plant. A very bold statement indeed!

Hate to spoil your expectations but I rank Crataegus schraderiana as an average tasting hawthorn. Better than chinese hawthorn but worse than C. tanacetifolia, C.ellwangeriana and C.submollis. Mexican hawthorn is on about the same level.

I certainly believe that Ken Fern meant what he said, but my understanding is that hawthorns can be quite variable in their genetics, one tree can be great whilst another is not so good. Of course, the plant’s terroir has a large impact on sweetness, flavour, and texture too.

Perhaps could explain why Mr. Fern ranks it so highly. He has been particularly lucky with the tree(s) he has sampled from?

I grow the tejocote, the Mexican hawthorn. It tastes good and, like all hawthorns, is medicinally good for your heart. There is a hybrid street tree that is quite common around here. It’s called the carriere hawthorn. I grafted some from the street trees into my yard. More productive than the Mexican one. They both taste good. I also eat the leaves, when I’m putting green leafies into my beans, pasta, rice, etc.
