The original prognosis was pretty much “the end of commercial fruit production as we’ve known it”- mainly because it was such a damaging pest to peaches in W. VA when it first arrived, but now the main problem is when they show up in large numbers in ones home.
I saw lots of stinkbugs in fruit trees this year and quite a bit of damage, even to red sweet peppers. but every one I saw was either a green or a squash stink bug. They like hot, relatively dry weather it seems. BMS never materialized as a huge problem in the orchards I manage in or near S. NY state.
