my owari satsuma is just about ripe as well. last year it was late dec before they ripened. i guess the bush is more mature this year than last. maybe why its ripening earlier. about 10 fruit on it and its only 2 ft. tall.
do you have a picture of it? id love to see its shape. all but one of my citrus plants have weird offshoots.
That’s how satsumas tend to grow in general
no i dont. not good at sending pics. i should say its 2 ft wide and maybe a ft. tall. it likes to sprawl. hard to keep it in balance and allow it to grow at the same time. most of the fruit are hanging on the sides of the pot. tried one today. needs a few more weeks to sweeten. good size this year compared to last. just fed and watered it.
Pineapple tasted amazing. I was kinda expecting it to be sour, but it was very juicy, sweet, and aromatic.
I forgot to share what I found last week!! ![]()
I was surprised! The plants snuck a couple in on me! These aren’t even the one I photographed before!
There is one further in the backgroud of this photo but it is much smaller than the one I have next to my hand in the previous photo.
There, my first ever homegrown chayote!! Yay!
I also forgot to share this picture… WHY NOW Ashitaba…?
Variegated pink lemon has so many blooms in the making! It’s so pretty and didn’t skip a beat being moved inside, so it’s my favorite.
An owari for the baby, these have been delicious. Most have a decent amount of seeds but I don’t mind. This one is about 3 feet away from a Meyer and 10 feet from an Arctic frost satsuma, kumquats also nearby so I don’t expect seedless ever.
Cranberry hibiscus are in full bloom.
Harvested my roselle and made jam. Made enough for gifts for Christmas as well as some for me to use. Will probably have enough on the plants for one more harvest. After that it will be seed saving and cross-breeding.
Does the cranberry variety produce edible calyxes too? Or is it an ornamental?
I sourced (hopefully) earlier flowering red and white roselle for next year. Started a couple indoors a few days ago entirely too early to see if I can get some huge transplants or have pretty window plants for the Winter anyway.
Where did you get earlier flowering red?
No the calyxes are hard and spikey. However, the leaves are edible and make an excellent tea. It is also a different species (H. acetosella) from roselle (H. sabdariffa).
Below is a supposed early variety (I have never grown it but a nursery owner I know trusts Cody and I trust that owner). My early whites (from said trusted nursery owner) had the same growth pattern as Cody’s early reds, and the time frame is essentially the same (August blooms, September harvest).
Thank you!
wonderful Joel Cherry Bush (i’m looking to buy three and plant in Maryland) but couldn’t help but to notice your Aluminum label! what’s the set-up – the label and stamping device?
I use this. It was recommended by someone here or on Facebook maybe. I’m quite happy with it. The rolls of labels have gone up a ton but I still don’t spend more than $10 or $20 a year even now labeling any and all plants I buy. But it used to be only like $2-$5 a year on rolls. I eat the cost, no biggie.
Sometimes I put the year I plant. But mostly the Latin name if needed for any information but usually just “Bush Cherry Joel” or “Currant Red Viking”, because I know what that means and it’s only me in the garden. If the plant came from someone or somewhere specific and the plants in question or I want to compare, I put thier name on the label. Or if it’s grafted and I want to know the rootstock I put it too.
thank you Heath! it looks like worthwhile investment! i even place a roll of stainless steel in my order ![]()
well, back to the Bush Cherries! I’m ordering Joel, Jan and Joy this year. i hope all went well with yours!
Happy Holidays & Merry Christmas!
