Burnt Ridge Rootstock Debacle - Rubber Bands are Not Expensive

I think fast growing trees is trying to sell to those like my grandma or uncle who think you need a massive tree right away that is about to or will produce the same year. Their trees are massive and they have a good selection. Just a bit overpriced. Also their sales representatives are clearly not into gardening because they can’t answer questions not already on their website. I likely bought 22 trees this year and lots of undercover for my trees this year. Fast growing Trees sent a massive tree which then wilted up in a day and died, Stark Bros has been hit or miss. 2/3 of their grape plants lived but one grape vine you could clearly see they did not have any buds. My Japanese plum came with black on the trunk which I suppose is my second bad tree for the year, they sent a apple tree with what I am pretty sure is fire blight at Stark Bros and tried to tell me to just spray next year so that was my third bad tree, one tree from One Green World did not come out of dormancy which was a 4th bad tree and Raintree sent me a cascade pear that was dead but then I ordered another and the other one was alive. The tree that never came out of dormancy had some green under the bark so One Green World could not have known. This means ironically enough the trees that came bad were all the expensive places being Fast Growing Trees and Stark Bros. Each place offering a 1 year guarantee but not wanting to stick by it. Each place charging close to 100 dollars for the trees were the bad ones.

I’d prefer self pollinating, guaranteed to be pest free, immune to drought and set up so a chime rings when the fruit is ripe.

Most prefer self fertile drought resistant and pest free. Some of those are easier to achieve than others though. Pest free should be a minimum for a plant. Self fertile and drought resistant really depends on the plant. If it is a peach or apricot I expect the plant to be self fertile but if it is a apple or pear I expect I need two varieties. Same with drought resistant since drought tolerance depends highly on the plant you select.

Give it a few more breeding cycles, we’ll get there!

So just to complete/compare notes, both my trees that had that fungus on the roots did eventually come out of it. The one that had green buds when I got it was just fine and is growing as good or better than any other tree I’ve ever gotten. The second one on the other hand, two weeks ago I took pictures of it getting ready to request a credit from one green world, as it had not pushed any growth at all. Then just a week ago it finally started pushing leaves! I was quite surprised. Late June is pretty late to be starting growth, but it did. One green world says to wait till July 1st to request refunds, so it made it just under the wire. I just hope it survives winter with such a late start.

My tri lite peach plum just started pushing leaves a few weeks ago too. Same thing happened with my grapes from Stark Bros. They just started pushing growth. Luckily one grape was not grafted because it is sending up a new piece from the roots. Now the hope is my super Red Fuji starts to come out from Stark Bros. It is literally the only tree I still have no leaves on now that my almond that was not out is gone.

Sky high demand is high profit. Don’t pity them for that.

They should refund you, yes.

If the labels fell off, that’s a mistake, no labels though, that’s malicious or possibly they aren’t even sending you what you ordered.

A lot of places can’t get anyone that speaks English to help…so maybe that
explains the problems since the COVID lockup fiasco pertaining to sorry service/price ratios that didn’t used to be like that at all. 5,10,15 years ago I could order from either of those nurseries and
be happy/ resulting plants.

Many places that actually pay can get people that speak English. It is the contract drivers places like Amazon, pickers on farms or laborers in construction that don’t tend to speak English. The jobs no one wants you get someone who doesn’t speak English. The issues I have seen with the online nurseries with customer service is they have basically gone full email service. No more just calling people. One Green World went e-mail before the pandemic and even when I found them in 2018 or 2019 it was email only. Burnt Ridge still answers the phone. Raintree Nursery is email only now unless you get lucky

That reminds me, do postal employees get ‘employee discounts’ on shipping?

No. That is something discussed during orientation. They like to piss their new employees off by stating we do not get a employee discount, you can only accept tips amounts up to 50 dollars per customer and it cannot be pure cash and you are always being watched so don’t try anything. Neither of the stores I worked at gave discounts. USPS does not and Home Depot gave discounts to veterans but not employees.

The jobs no English speaker wants…
