Cabbage, Cauliflower and Broccoli, oh my - 2025/2026

I’ve mentioned the giant kohlrabi I grow a few times. I harvested one last weekend and wanted to share what they look like when mature, etc. I peel the outside, cube it up and freeze the cubes in a gallon bag and also chop up the greens (without the ribs) of the greens and put those in another bag. They go into the freezer and I basically use one bag of cubes and one bag of greens to make a big pot of soup in the winter using a recipe I have for kale soup. The kohrabi greens replace the kale and the cubes replace the potatoes in the recipe. It is great to basically get enough from one kohlrabi to make an entre pot of soup. You can also cut them into long strips instead of cubes and use them fresh with dips, etc.

I used to grow the “normal” kohlrabi, but the little bulbs are so much more work and you get so much less food once you peal off the outsides so now I usually only grow 4-6 of the giants. Mine are usually in the 4-5 pound range, but I understand people in cooler areas can get them up to 10 pounds plus quite easily.

still going strong here in a hotter climate. not like the south but hotter summers than the pnw.. we’ll see how they do through august
