I agree with Blueberry; the new canes just die back partly and then start growing from the remaining green part.
We had a low of 3F before Christmas last year… none of my late summer/fall growth died back.
We did have two nights in the mid 20s mid March… and my tiffblue early blossoms got frosted. This was the first year in 10 or so… that i had blueberry blossoms to get frosted bad enough they did not fruit. Only affected the early blossoms… it bloomed more after that and did produce a pretty good crop.
Thank you all. I am glad I cut those ancient canes last week. Looks like the bush handled the late age transplant well.
what do you fertilize it with? I am assuming organic stuff which probably takes the whole winter to breakdown?
Keep in mind that the pH should be about 4.5 for blueberries. I keep a bag of sulphur in the basement so I can add a bit when needed. Organic material is also very beneficial. I use a combination of leaves, grass from mowing, chicken manure, and a handful or two of commercial 13-13-13.
As soon as berry production is done… for a few of my varieties that is early July… for others late July…
I give my larger bushes 2 cups of epsoma holly tone… it includes both water-soluble and slow release N sources… and lots of other good stuff… it helps to acidify as well.
I also give each bush 4 gal of water over two weeks… including something like this. My wife normally has this and bloom boster for her flowers. Sometimes she buys the miraclegrow brand… but this year she had something diferent. Below shows the dstails.
I see good new growth in Aug and September.
thanks, this bush is planted is in a raised bed filled with peat + fir bark mulch. Adding some elemental sulphur is a good idea.
New growth happening now… these are in ground and 6 to 7.5 ft tall, quite bushey. A lot of this growth has just happened in the past 3 years.
Nice plants. Look like Rabbiteyes or possibly southern highbush.
