Can apple trees be propagated by root cuttings?

i needed to shorten some of my apple rootstocks(B9 and M26) to fit in the pots i have for them so i took a chunk off the bottoms that carried some roots. i put them in cups with the same mix the stocks were going into at about ~1" depth. not a typical root cutting. a super root cutting! well see how it goes.

i also stuck the rootstock tops into some medium as well after slicing the ends and dipping in IBA powder, like figs.

You could graft buds from the top would be pretty straightforward and improve odds of success.

those are like 2" root segments. might not be that easy lol maybe a cleft graft or something

Last spring I took about 4 of my Bud 9 tops left over from my grafting and put them in a quart jar of water a placed in the window sill. It took over a month, but 2 of them rooted.

since ohxf stock is propagated by cuttings and the roots are mainly at the bottom of the stock i didnt have extra to cut off. i did have a couple quince cutoffs to park some medlar on. not my best work but well see:
