Romeo replacement from 2 years ago flowered heavily and set about 15 fruit. I had my first under-ripe one two days ago and was impressed-good flavor, even though tart. I knew it was under-ripe by the color but wanted a sample before some animal decided it was ripe enough. I’m trying to let the remaining 6 or 7 fruit get to that really dark color before harvesting.
I am always surprised how late they flower and how quickly they ripen. It is one of the last fruits to flower but the first to ripen.
Any update on how the carmine jewel is doing? How many chill hours do you think you are needing to get fruit?
Carmine Jewel and Romeo have grown well for me the past few years. Both have many root suckers. However, neither the originals nor the suckers ever set many fruit, despite flowering heavily. This is probably a chill hours issue. I’m planning on replacing them, probably with blackberries.
CJ is a fantastic producer here in the piedmont of western NC . Blooms late to avoid frost and ripens early. We get from 1000 to 1400 chill hours.
How does that pitter do on the Carmine jewels? What is the brand?
I am amazed how these look kinda like maraschino cherries, but without the opaque flesh. Those things are nasty. These look amazing though.
