Chocolate vines - Akebia trifoliata or Akebia quinata

I got my mom two little plants last year. They are planted in full sun. She was surprised when they fruited this year.

I’m surprised and afraid that they did that well! The vine can be very aggressive at times in certain areas. Thankfully mine have not been that hardy. If i got fruit in a year i would be so happy i would be jumping up and down! Keep close eyes on it!

Luckily they are planted in an area where they can’t really expand- it’s on a wire fence in a wide open field on one side and a yard on the other. They have livestock out there but I don’t know if the vines get graised on or not. I got her a white and purple plant but it looks like the purple one was the only plant to set fruit. I got it as a novelty because the fruit looks so weird.

They can expand. They will send out vines everywhere and birds will spread the seeds everywhere.
They are HIGHLY invasive if grown in zones 6-10, possibly zone 5 as well.
