In California, I’ve noticed some of the sunflower farmers replacing their crops with sorghum.
This is so interesting! Thank you for posting about your process. Have you ever made flour from it? I bake exclusively gluten free, developing my own flour blends/recipes, but learned about sorghum late in the game and haven’t experimented with it much. Curiosity reignited seeing you growing it! How much space does it take up growing? Any pictures of the whole plant?
i got a few
last year it was by the corn, this year it was at the end of the row of winter squashes on the panel
last year
this year the pictures aren’t as good. they’re stickin up at the top of the patch of chaos in that full section of garden. there’s twice as many but i couldn’t get a good picture, the garden was real dense this year.
pulled another pile of things and kept on canning and cooking. today is round two, I’m going back in in a few.
I’ve got grape seedlings and rooted cuttings, baby apple trees, a pawpaw seedling, and some raspberries to plant out soon too. waiting on things to start to go dormant before i move them.
Did just one tromboncino plant give you all that you’ve harvested?
this was two plants!
it is October 5 and tonight is the first predicted killing frost. tonight and tomorrow, Frost.
all tender trees and perennials and subtropicals are in the greenhouse with the little heater, I’ve got this coming week to insulate in there.
the past two days, and today, are all about pulling in anything that will not make it through- all peppers, squash, tomatillos, green tomatoes, etc
debating on the sweet potatoes. should i harvest, pull into the greenhouse, or leave out then harvest after? regular potatoes will be fine. I’ve got beets and chard and such out there, they’ll be fine.
rearranging the beds once things have died back. it’s going to be the last big “project” year for that, I’m building in slightly raised beds in permanent spots with walkways between.
also watching for the grape and apple seedlings to go dormant, so i can put them along the driveway area.
my prize trombos:
before the cleanup:
Oct 7
first frost night before last but not a bad one. tonight or tomorrow another. cleanup in progress
the sweet potatoes are yellowing so I’ll harvest those soon. tomatoes and tomatilloes dead. peppers still going!? filled the raised bed portion of the cold frame, still need to add springs to make it easier to open and prop up, the window is heavy
compost in bins until i need to fill the next bed with it.
siphoned the greenhouse barrel full from the roof runoff barrel. put the solar panels along the sunny bit of the greenhouse. built a little roof for the ebike to keep water out of the saddle bags.
figs, citrus, olives and avocado all in the greenhouse along with several pepper plants cut back and washed down. planning raised bed areas and mounds for next year with more walking paths space.
cleanup and beginning to build my pallet beds out. I’m making BIG paths for next year.
done with canning too for now, once it’s freezing out I’ll do my spaghetti and tomatoes in the greenhouse with the portable burner.
onto the winter and fall endeavors. had a few branches trimmed, so I’m drying ponderosa needles for gift making
if i had Willow trees there’d be bigger presents
Wow the basket is beautiful!
thank you! I’m still learning, the green ones are good to learn with.
also cut the one and only “big” melon today, an orange glo i picked last week
small and pale but juicy. sweet. I’ll save any mature seeds and try it again next year i guess.
I love the baskets! Yet another thing I would love to learn but have not got to. Heh.
been sick so all I’ve done outside is plant out all the best seedlings one day and then checking the greenhouse.
collecting a lot of the best pine needles as i take them for mulch and drying and making more baskets now that I’ve got the hang of it a little better. i started making “pocket” ones to hang everywhere for the summer season when I’ve got a lot of stuff to store in the kitchen. this is my garlic basket for the winter
here are the king needles (long central ones) that are drying for another project. I’m hoping i can fill a big box to keep me going with these as winter handiwork.
was foggy this morning. most things have started to die back from frost but somehow a goldenberry is still alive? strange. we’ve had freezes!
frozen birdbath next to that plant.
the meyer lemon is ripening a good number in the greenhouse.
fruit baskets, for next year. some for gifts. and the finished sorghum harvest so far. more grain to winnow and that’ll all be done. I’ll fill this last jar most likely with it. I’ll have a few to last until next year
The hanging basket is such a great idea! They’re all really cool.
Congratulations on your Meyer Lemon fruit!
Do you have issue with scale on your lemon? Every time I have had one (or most citrus I’ve grown) it would get scale super bad when I brought it into the house. Though, I will note. Last year I brought my cirus into the garage and it was fine.
no, it seems ok! i do get aphids on any peppers i over winter, like the instant they wake up. i have to spray them like little trees!
I’m on fmla and still sick at home, so the wild basketru continues. the trees are dropping leaves fully, finally. and i got several olives off my tiny olive tree
my partner was painting the house, and i made squash to drain for a pie.
Amazing baskets and beautiful paint job on the house!
Hopefully you are not extremely ill? If you are pregnant, congratulations!
Those baskets are beautiful, about how long does it take for you to complete one?
I’m past menopause thankfully haha
i had whooping cough and am still sick, all this time later.
@Fishsauce it takes a night of watching bad TV shows on auto play to make a small one
i am still sick stuck in the house so here’s a few more
the weather here has been far too warm. high winds. the greenhouse insulation got torn from it but i haven’t been able to get out and try to fix it up
I’m sorry you have been sick for so long. Pertussis can be brutal and linger. I hope something shifts and you improve quickly. The baskets are really beautiful.
