What about breeding California laurel (umbellularia californica) for hardiness and improved fruit? It has semi edible fruits like little avocados, which can ripen in a single growing season and it’s already hardy to some parts of zone 7. It’s no avocado, but it’s also not entirely unrealistic that it could produce something if given a bit of protection in zone 5. The leaves smell nice, if nothing else.
Those look amazing! ! I have 2 Rincon Valley trees from Winn’s trial, and they are fixing to bloom a lot this spring. He said the Rincon Valley tree died in Seattle, but it’s doing well here. Of course I planted them outside near the citrus, so I protect them when it’s particularly inhospitable. Winn also gave me a royal wright seedling when I picked up the Rincón Valley trees. The thing is massive now, over 8 feet. Unfortunately it probably won’t bloom for many more years.
