I like lots of energy stored in the fruits mainly in the form of high brix.
Agree, but I was talking about over the winter. If summer pruning reduces root and trunk size, that is not the vigor that I want to attenuate, right?
All I can think about that is: No deer in that orchard. That would be a smorgasbord for whitetails. They’d have to beat off the hunters cause they’d grow them with huge racks and to 300 lbs.
Summer Pruning: zone 6 Massachusetts.
I SO want to give my combo fruit trees and espaliers a haircut.
These are all 2-3 years in my ground. I would like to take down the verticals. I have created som horizontals on the Apple and pear. But even they are 3 feet too long. I honestly can not see the fruit buds or tell the difference between fruit wood and non fruit wood. All I know is the tall vertical ones look like they need to be cut down to a handful of leaves. Anyone willing to take a look at my trees and suggest cuts?
