Elbertas are in and huge

I am very happy for you also, even though I thought I should say something to make others consider options before rushing out and ordering that particular variety. There’s been a lot of breeding done since that one hit the scene. That was the first widely grown peach that ripened firm enough to ship and in itself, spawned the southern fresh peach industry.

Yes I want to add Red Haven and O’Henry as they work well here, and are very good peaches too. After that I may experiment more. So many good ones though that work well here. I think I have all I need after I add them. I want too add Indian Blood too. And any others will probably be early to mid-season peaches.

H-man part of my success is to me paying attention to what you have said, along with Olpea, Fruitnut and Scott. Yes, I thinned hard and came away with close to forty pounds of sweet, fabulous tasting peaches from a very old variety. This is what you have helped create and I thank you all. I’m enjoying every one! I do know there are far better varieties out there. Just don’t have room for all of them.

I don’t remember ever tasting an Elberta before. A friend was handing out Elberta peaches that came from a neighbor’s overabundant tree. They were huge and yellow and late, so I didn’t doubt that they were as advertised. But they were surprising tasteless and not sweet. We were quite disappointed. This season started being too wet and then changed to near drought conditions. I don’t know if that would affect flavor. It didn’t affect our own peaches. Red Havens were particularly flavorful this year. I haven’t heard that Elbertas could be so bland. Any good explanation?

My Elberta tree is 8 years old. It had a handful of peaches in 2022 and 2023, they were very much unimpressive. None last year, late freeze got 'em. This year it was loaded, they were mostly large, and tasted very good. Not the best I’ve ever had but good enough that we picked and gave away or ate every one of them. That’s with it being the rainiest year we’ve seen in a decade+ as well… So if there’s a bit less rain next year, I’m hopeful they’ll be even better.
