Elephant Heart- Queen of J. plums

Yes, those roots should be pulled out gently, so as not to break them, before planting to spread in all directions in the hole before backfilling.

Yesterday I grafted a few small Golden Nectar Plum scions on the tree. I see they’re late like the EH and they look pretty good. Not a lot of info on them. Have you tried these and do you think they would be good for pollinating each other? @DennisD @alan

I’m not familiar with Golden Nectar Plum‘s character and cross pollination suitability. You should try to locate a grower nearby in your zone to see if you can find someone who has the blossom timing data for each variety you want to cross pollinate. Better to locate a local member rather than rely on a nursery’s advice since timing can vary greatly among growing zones. The most important factor assuming you want natural versus hand pollination is to match the timing of when each variety opens blossom. The first few days after that event is when a blossom is most receptive.

Thank you Dennis, I didn’t know it was such a short window for the pollination. I’d definitely prefer natural.

Both came from DWN. Not sure if that correlates to the blossoms opening but I’ll find out. Maybe I can collect and store in the fridge if they’re off. Both said very late on the tags. Surprised they don’t have more info on their website though.

Here’s their maturity dates for what it’s worth.

EH August 30 to September 30

GN August 15 to August 30 also noted as Self Fruitful

Some information.

Thanks for sharing that very good info.

As far as I know, fruit riping and blossom timing are not related at all

Thank you Frank a question I was still pondering as I’m watching my very late EH plum start to blossom along with some earlier varieties. When they sell the plums they always put down the times of harvest but only owning one plum tree I care more about the timing of flowers providing pollen. I recently grafted a Golden Nectar scion on my tree as mentioned above so I hope they will flower at the same time. Guess I won’t know know until next year.
